Kanye West closed out Governors Ball on Sunday night with a monster set that found him performing three new songs from his upcoming sixth album Yeezus, in addition to “Black Skinhead” and “New Slaves,” which he’d previously debuted on “SNL.” And judging from the tweets, Instagram and Vine shares from the night, Yeezus season is officially in full swing.
‘Ye performed “On Site” and “I Am God,” plus another new cut that we have no title for as yet, and the crowd was open to everything he wanted to share. The new music was met with applause, while classics like “Good Life,” “Power” and “Heartless” sent the energy soaring and even inspired a few sing-a-longs.
“Kanye killed itttttt! Love all his old sh– and that new new sh– #newslaves #blackskinheads #yeezus,”@WhittyWhit85 wrote, while @laura_pul added, “every new Yeezy song that comes out gets me more and more hyped #yeezyseason.”
Some fans found the perfect words to describe the explosive set, with @mtye writing, “Kanye’s new sh– is sick. Epic and awesome set at #GovernorsBall. Counting the days till #Yeezus.” @benro692 added, “Kanye outperformed everyone who performed at Ulta combined #Yeezus” and @cherrule chimed in with, “can I just say the name of the pastor in chrcuh today was Mr. West” #yeezus.”
Yeezus is set for release on June 18, the same day that J. Cole drops Born Sinner and Mac Miller releases Watching Movies With the Sound Off, and some fans are already calling it a win for ‘Ye. “#Yeezus gonna end up being better than born sinner,”@_Gzzz, while @sayuri_YNWA weighed in with, “I cannot get over how amazing New Slaves is! #Yeezus.”
A few fans even used their Vine account to share video snippets of the new songs ‘Ye performed, so fans not at the festival could hear.
At one point in the night, he G.O.O.D. Music CEO explained why fans haven’t heard any of his new music on the radio, with the album set to drop in just a few days. “We ain’t drop no single to radio. We ain’t got no big NBA campaign or nothing like that–Sh– we ain’t even got no cover,” he told the crowd. “We just made some real music.
“When I listen to radio, that ain’t where I wanna be no more,” he added. “And honestly, at this point I can give a f— about selling a million records, as long as I put out an album y’all can rock to all summer.”
