After 70 live performances in three cities, a new world record and a room full of cats, the O Music Awards are officially a wrap!
The 24-hour “Live Music Day” kicked off at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night with a performance by the Jonas Brothers from Times Square. Middle brother Joe even left with the Best Artist Instagram award.
For the next few hours, the party alternated between New York and Nashville with sets from Kate Nash, Hanson, Nikki Williams and Gavin DeGraw. While some of the East Coast closed their eyes for a few hours, Los Angeles stepped in with performances by Grouplove, the Mowgli’s and more.
And through it all, no matter the time of day and always wearing a pair of shades, Andrew W.K. , kept drumming for 24-hours non-stop, setting a world record for the Longest Drum Session in a Retail Store. He was posted up at the Oakley store in Times Square for the entire awards show, and MTV News caught up with him after he was presented with a formal world-record certificate to find out just how he got through it.
Guests ?uestlove, Nick Jonas, Zac Hanson, Marky Ramon and even a cowbell-playing Cuba Gooding Jr. jumped in to show their support throughout his drumathon. W.K. attributed them, as well as his friends, wife and fans, for getting him through. And even though he admitted to feeling “every emotion” and physical pain, he said it was hard to tell because of all the excitement.
“I actually never got tired because there was so much adrenaline and so many people that were especially giving so much energy. It really felt like a team effort,” said W.K., who presented with the OMA for Must-Follow Artist on Twitter.
During the challenging 19th hour, W.K. also got help from Favorite Musical Cat award-winner Lil Bub when she sent him some of her magical energy, further cementing her status as “the most amazing cat on the planet.”
While a handful of unique awards were given out, the most coveted was the Fan Army FTW. Beating out Big Bang’s VIP and Thirty Seconds to Mars’ Echelon, Tokio Hotel’s Aliens won the crown for the fourth time. Tokio Hotel’s Bill Kaulitz thanked fans, adding, “we’re in the studio still, but, we’re definitely going to put out something this year. I promise here now 100 percent.”
Meanwhile, the fan-voted Make a Band Famous award went to pop/rock band Darling Parade. The Nashville-based band will have a once-in-a-lifetime shot at performing before during VMA weekend in August.
From play sessions to naps to some inappropriate public grooming, a litter of kittens on the “Cat Stage” at the Bidawee Animal Shelter were the silent stars. And thanks to the live stream, two of the kittens have been adopted.
