Jay-Z has a long list of unlikely admirers following the release of his Magna Carta… Holy Grail. Now director Baz Luhrmann joins the likes of Tom Ford and Hov’s R-Train homey Ellen Grossman as MCHG cheerleaders.
The famed film director has issued this Magna Carta synopsis to MTV News:
“The thing that has always stuck with me from my knowledge about the birth of hip hop was its natural lack of prejudice toward any genre of music. Having worked with this musician, artist, entrepreneur and ‘serial collaborator’ for nearly two years, I always remember him telling me that there’s only good music and bad music. I heard some remarkable pieces from this new album early on but what is really exceptional about the whole work is its diversity. It’s not so much that Jay plays by the rules, he just makes them up as he goes along. The pundits will of course pund but Jay just continues to move creatively and unexpectedly above and beyond it all.”

Luhrmann partnered with Hov on “The Great Gatsby” earlier this year, tasking the rap king with putting together a big-time soundtrack for the film. Jay rounded up Beyoncé, will.i.am, Fergie, Lana Del Rey and Jack White. “Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz were two of the first people to ever see a rough cut of the film,” Luhrmann told MTV News in May, when he recalled first speaking to Jay about collaborating on the film. “He totally nailed that the book was aspirational.”
