Demi Lovato Calls Her VMA Friends ‘Fierce Competition’

PHILADELPHIA — If you’re Demi Lovato, chances are you’re feeling good right now. The pop singer not only premiered her brand-new co-directed video for “Made in the USA” Wednesday, but she also just got nominated for “Best Female Video” at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.

“I think that’s amazing. My reaction is just so excited, it’s an honor just to be nominated,” Lovato told MTV News at the Pop-Tarts Crazy Good Summer concert in Philadelphia, hours after the nominations were announced. “And every time I’m nominated for something I get really, really excited. You never know what will happen, but I’m up against some fierce competition so I’m not getting my hopes up.”

The singer is up for the Chris Applebaum-directed clip “Heart Attack,” the lead single off Demi. The video showed off an edgier side of Lovato, who demonstrated the raw emotion of the song through visuals, by painting her hands black to almost mask herself from falling in love.

The talented ladies she’s up against include Rihanna (“Stay”), Pink (“Just Give Me a Reason”), Taylor Swift (“I Knew You Were Trouble”) and Miley Cryus (“We Can’t Stop”). And because Lovato is friends with several of her fellow nominees, she doesn’t expect there to be any hard feelings if her buddy takes home the award August 25 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

“Since I’ve started in this business, we’ve all been up against each other, and at the end of the day, it’s an award,” Lovato said. “If you do win it you get really excited and you’re proud of it for the rest of your life, but that’s how I feel about it.”

And with her die-hard fan base, the Lovatics, backing her up, there’s a good chance Lovato could be taking home a KAWS-created Moonman, and she already knows exactly where she will put it.

“In my head I’m like decorating my apartment, and I’m like, ‘OK, if I do win, I’ll get another Moonman on my mantel,” Lovato said. “I already have the spot picked out so that’s if…I already have one so that’s good enough for me.”

Lovato performed during the 2012 VMA pre-show and took home her first award that year — “Best Video with a Message” for her hit song “Skyscraper.”

“It’s iconic, there are so many amazing artists that win VMAs and to be amongst those people is incredible,” Lovato said. “And just the iconic Moonman award, you see it and you’re like ‘Wow, I grew up watching this and now I have one’ and it’s pretty amazing.”

To see who takes home the Moonman, don’t forget to watch the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, live on Sunday, August 25 at 9 p.m. ET on MTV!
