This is not the kind of history Lady Gaga was looking to make. After a months-long pre-release promotional blitz that spanned the globe and made use of nearly every medium possible, Mother Monster will lay claim to a chart record this week when ARTPOP suffers a big second-week slide.
And while Gaga tumbled hard from the top spot she secured last week with the modest-for-her open for her magnum pop art opus, Eminem battled back into the #1 spot with The Marshall Mathers LP 2 , which will be back at #1 despite dropping another 43 percent as sales hit 120,000, according to figures provide by Nielsen SoundScan. Em has moved more than 1.1 million units in three weeks.
Gaga Back In Top 5 … Of Worst Drops
After ruling the charts last week, Gaga slipped real hard, dropping 82 percent to #8 as ARTPOP sales shriveled to just under 46,000, for a two-week total of 305,000. With that historic nosedive, Gaga now has two albums in the top five list of all-time biggest second-week percentage drops in the SoundScan era.
The record is held by Madonna, whose MDNA spiraled down nearly 87 percent back in April 2012, with Gaga’s Born This Way just behind at 84.2 percent and Mac Miller’s Blue Slide Park a shade below at 82.54 percent. ARTPOP now slides in behind Mac Mill at #4, moving ahead of Kanye West’s Yeezus (80.27 percent).
Five Finger Death Punch Their Way Into Top Three
Hard rockers Five Finger Death Punch slugged their way into the #2 slot with The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Volume 2 (77,000), one of several new faces in the top 10.
debuted at #5 (55,000), while Daughtry’s Baptized was a shade behind at #6 (55,000) and Yo Gotti’s I Am slid in at #7 (47,000).
After a month in the top five, Katy Perry’s Prism shifted down six spots to #11 as sales dipped 16 percent to 39,000 and her total moved past 524,000.
Over on the iTunes album chart, pre-orders for One Direction’s third album, Midnight Memories held down the #1 spot, ahead of Eminem, with Gaga down at #8 on that chart as well. Expect 1D to easily top the Billboard tally next week with Memories projected to move more than 500,000 copies.
Eminem Two-For-Two
Em held down the #1 spot on the Billboard Digital Songs chart, where it sold another 241,000, more than enough to keep Lorde’s “Royals” at #2 (177,000).
Otherwise the top 10 was just a shuffling of the deck, as OneRepublic’s “Counting Stars” fell one to #3 (167,000), Pitbull’s “Timber” held at #4 (166,000) and Imagine Dragons stayed put at #5 with “Demons” (124,000). The only big mover was A Great Big World’s hook-up with Christina Aguilera, “Say Something,” which was up six to #6 as sales shot up 59 percent to 121,000.
