‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Poster: Is That Who We Think It Is?

A three-poster-wide banner for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” has revealed surprising new insights to the forces the web-slinger will face come May 2.

The theater display, which showed up on Twitter over the weekend, shows Spider-Man from behind, going up against Jamie Foxx’s Electro. On the other two sheets are a large, mechanical take on Rhino and someone who looks a lot like Green Goblin on a glider.

While the first look at an armored Rhino is surprising, it’s not totally unexpected. We did know — thanks to some on-set paparazzi shots — that Paul Giamatti would step into something a little more elaborate than the track suit we saw from the official first look. The mechanical Rhino appears to be more animalistic than the character’s traditional costume, which amounts to a big guy in a gray onesie with a horn attached.

The real shocker here (no Electro pun intended) is the appearance of a character that may or may not be a rebooted Green Goblin. Up until this point, we knew that both Norman and Harry Osborn, the first and second Goblins, respectively, will appear in the sequel, played by Chris Cooper and Dane DeHaan. It was largely assumed, however, that the Osborns as villains would be saved for future installments, especially with an Oscar winner already tapped for the bad-guy role.

That assumption could still end up being largely true, making any appearance of the Green Goblin essentially a set-up for a bigger role in “The Amazing Spider-Man 3.” When MTV News spoke with Cooper, he confirmed as much for Norman. ” ‘[Amazing] Spider-Man 2’ was an introduction to Norman, and — you’ll see — an extremely odd introduction, which apparently will lead to something more,” he said.

The appearance of three major Spider-Man villains on one poster also lends to the popular belief that the series is angling toward the formation of the Sinister Six, a team of baddies that join forces.

Perhaps we’ll have more definite answers when the first trailer for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” debuts on December 5.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” opens in theaters on May 2, 2014.
