Lorde Just Made This Girl’s Life

by 30 mins ago

We hate to tell you this, guys, but no matter what happened to you today — your crush told you s/he feels the same way, you won something from one of those claw machines, you cured cancer — there’s no way you had a better day than a 12 year old named Amanda.

Nope. No way. No how. Your life looks like a grey road leading to nowhere, the sucking fogs of forgotten time lapping at the edges, when compared to Miss @LongLiveLorde’s. Can you guess where this is going from her Twitter handle?

Yup, not only did Amanda’s parents surprise her with Lorde tickets — and film the whole thing, because #2014 — Lorde herself RT’d the video, writing: “just got sent this and i am teary– COOLEST GIRL EVER.”

Amanda reacted the way we all would have in this case: by sending out a barrage of borderline speaking-in-tongues tweets. Here’s our favorite.

Eff schoole, am I right? Lorde thinks this girl is the coolest — and after watching the video in question, we have to agree. We won’t give too much away, save for this choice quote: “So we’re not going to the water park?” Classic.

Lena Dunham Says Not Voting Is ‘Embarrassing’

by 35 mins ago

Lena Dunham has kind of a big secret: She didn’t always vote. I know. I was shocked, too. Ms. Dunham, she who penned this quote…

girls-voice-of-my-generation

… wasn’t always using said “voice.”

“I didn’t always vote. And that’s embarrassing, more embarrassing than being naked on TV or being told you look like a ‘baby giraffe’ when you walk in heels at awards shows,” Dunham wrote in a recent article on a Planned Parenthood blog in celebration of National Voter Registration Day.

“I didn’t vote for a lot of reasons: because I thought our mothers had already handled feminism. Because I live in New York City where, I was told, it was all Democrats anyway. But mostly because I didn’t feel my voice mattered,” she added.

Obviously, Dunham changed her tune, as evidenced by this slightly racy video she made in support of now-President Obama in 2012.

And now, she’s hoping she can convince others — perhaps little Lenas of the present? — to register as well, laying out her top reasons for taking the plunge. Those reasons are: 1.) It makes you feel good. 2.) Every vote is equal (you and Bey ARE THE SAME). 3.) Those candidates and incumbents running for office could control your sex life (in ways that are decidedly not fun). 4.) There are a lot of people out there who are anti-women’s health. 5.) Voting leads to doing greater things.

You can read Lena’s whole list here — she says ...

These Little Monsters Are Crying, Going Broke And Cheering Over Lady Gaga’s Cheek To Cheek

by 26 mins ago

“That Lady Gaga — she’s really talented,” my dad said over the phone Monday after hearing selections from her and Tony Bennett‘s Cheek To Cheek on NPR. “She has a wonderful voice,” Dad Ehrlich — a.k.a. the newest of all Little Monsters — added, and I could tell he was smiling.

Well, Dad wasn’t the only one raving Tuesday (September 23) when Gaga’s latest release — after 2013′s ARTPOP — dropped. A selection of jazz standards as reimagined by Gaga and the 88-year-old icon, the record seems to have reached Little Monsters of all ages, their paws poised above keyboards and ready with the praise.

Check out our favorite reactions — aside from my dad’s because he doesn’t have Twitter — below:

1. Some are into her art (pop).

Preach.

2. Some are using this opp to bond with grandma…

…and go to Belgium. Not sure what that last part has to do with anything, but, cool! Bring us back a waffle?

3. Some think it’s the perfect music with which to fall into fall.

Can we tempt you with a Pumpkin Spice Four Loko?

4. Others are really into jazz now.

Somewhere, Cole Porter is smiling…

5. Some see the record as a release from the mundanities of life…

… or at least three-hour lectures.

6. Others see it at proof of Mother Monster’s undeniable superiority.

Paws up!

7. Others are using the album as incentive.

We hope you nab that part!

8. Still others are just kind of crying.

Someone get this Monster a tissue.

9. While others ...

Hey Ariana Grande? The Right Side Of Your Face Is Pretty Awesome, Too

by 18 mins ago

Most of us — save astronauts — will never see the other side of the moon, the so-called “dark side,” as Pink Floyd has dubbed it. It’s an elusive place — one full of mystery and untold beauties.

Well, today, friends, we’re all astronauts — face astronauts… Ariana astronauts — as we’re now finally privy to a side of Ariana Grande previously unseen: the right side of her face.

Rejoice! For the “Problem” singer has bestowed upon us that most mysterious and awe-inspiring of gifts: a selfie depicting her other cheek.

There have been many rumors lately — ones Ariana has all but shut down with grace and aplomb — that the powerhouse singer prefers being photographed only from the left.

Well, we’re hear to tell you, Ariana, after seeing the fabled “other side” via selfie: If you are, indeed, feeling any trepidation… Let it shine lady! Let the glowing apple orb of your cheek into the sunshine and light! Toss your epic pony over your opposite shoulder and, to use your words, “Break Free”, because you — both sides of you — are equally beautiful.

We’ll love you either way — it doesn’t matter if you’re left or right.

Kesha Joins Fight To Get This Kid’s Laser Cat Photo In The Yearbook

by 7 mins ago

One high school kid’s courageous fight to use a laser-and-cat-filled photo as his senior portrait found a new supporter Friday (September 19): The human rainbow herself, Kesha. Draven Rodriguez was unaware of this state of affairs, however — until MTV News told him — because he was pretty busy learning things and prepping for crew practice, as a H.S. student does.

“I’ll have to get back to that in the next week or so,” Rodriguez told MTV News as he ambled toward all the boats and paddles and things we imagine they use whilst crewing (doing crew? playing crew?). “Next time I have a chance I should log on. That’s awesome.”

Awesome, indeed. The “Timber” singer took to Twitter today to stand in solidarity with the high school senior, posting the below tweet to the microblogging site — one that pretty much sums up how we all feel.

For those of you who hate the Internet and fun, Rodriguez preemptively started a petition that went viral last week, asking Schenectady High School to let him use as Awkward Family Photo-esque snap of him and his cat Mr. Bigglesworth as his yearbook snap.

He had previously taken the photo with photographer Vincent Giodano as a joke, choosing to highlight the cat that the family had acquired the year before. “He literally walked into our lives early last year when my other cat died,” the Everyman of Cats told News. “He looked like a carbon copy of her.”

Perhaps Mr. B ...

HAIM Put Out A Record Shaped Like Alana And We Must Have It

by 34 mins ago

STOP EVERYTHING!

I will now demonstrate stopping everything with this infinitely appropriate YouTube video…

Now that I have your attention, may I present: A record shaped like a human. And that human’s name? Alana Mychal Haim. Of HAIM fame.

giphy-3

HAIM announced the existence of this glorious piece of wax on Twitter, informing fans and record hounds alike that the disc will contain two versions of “My Song Five,” one featuring A$AP Ferg.

I don’t know about you, but I’m having trouble holding myself back from pushing “Buy” — but I’m also the girl who bought Girls’ (RIP) heart-shaped vinyl and that Jack White record with the hologram (plus this thing), so it might just be me.

If you, too, are scheming on buying HAIM’s disc, however, hit me up on Twitter — we can drool together.

Stop Everything — ‘HIMYM’ Has Cleared Up The Pineapple Incident

by 40 mins ago

One down, 12 more to go — a single burning query has been answered from our previously published “13 Questions Left Unanswered By ‘How I Met Your Mother’” story. And, dudes, it’s kind of a big one.

After “HIMYM” wrapped for good last spring — and after our tears dried — we rapidly realized that one of the biggest mysteries of the series had gone un-mystery-ed: Where did that pineapple come from?

If you don’t recall this particular piece of fruit, Ted woke to find it sitting on his nightstand one morning after a massively unmemorable drunken bender. Unmemorable in that he had no idea what happened. At the end of the episode, he had managed to piece it all together, “The Hangover”-style, but the pineapple remained a prickly enigma.

Until now. Buzzfeed was given an exclusive deleted scene — which will be included in the upcoming series boxset — in which everything is finally revealed.

When Bill Clinton Was President, Laptops Were Basically Unrecognizable

by 16 mins ago

While people around the country are already in line for the latest in Apple product shininess, former U.S. President Bill Clinton shared a photo this Throwback Thursday (September 18) reminding us that computers didn’t always fit in our pockets. Oh! And that they weren’t always oh-so sleek ‘n’ lovely.

“I sent my first (ever!) email to John Glenn… while he was in space with @NASA. #TBT,” Clinton wrote on Twitter, thereby shaming all of us whose first email was sent to our first-grade penpal in Greenland (not naming names here).

A former U.S. Senator and astronaut, Glenn was the first American to orbit the earth in 1962 and later traveled on the space shuttle Discovery in 1998. We’re guessing that Clinton shot off that email on Glenn’s second trip, on which the then-77-year-old planned to serve as a guinea pig for geriatric studies.

Something something joke about geriatric studies and that ancient laptop. Something something.

21 Facts About Sexual Assault That Will Open Your Eyes

by 2 mins ago

As college campuses around the country come buzzing to life, many students are preparing to take future-changing classes and make friends that will last forever. Some students, however, may have their lives altered in much less positive ways — students like Columbia senior Emma Sulkowicz, who has vowed to carry a mattress around her university until her alleged rapist is removed from campus.

It’s for students such as these that MTV has partnered with President Obama and Vice President Biden to help support the launch of their new campaign called “It’s On Us,” which focuses on preventing sexual assaults before they happen — with an emphasis on men stepping forward and intervening.

Obama previously spoke about sexual assault this year, saying, “We can do more to make sure that every young man out there — whether they’re in junior high or high school or college or beyond — understands what’s expected of them and what it means to be a man, and to intervene if they see somebody else acting inappropriately.”

In an effort to raise awareness about sexual assault and rape, MTV News has compiled a list of facts about survivors, attackers and the aftermath of assault below:

On Survivors

1. 1 out of every 6 American women has been either raped or almost raped in her lifetime.

How Is The U.S. Doing When It Comes To Accepting Transgender People? Laura Jane Grace Weighs In

by 2 mins ago

Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace is a brave person — from coming out as a transgender woman in Rolling Stone to penning her truly heartbreaking (yet, god-this-is-amazing) record Transgender Dysphoria Blues. Now, she has decided to lay it all bare in her new webseries, “True Trans With Laura Jane Grace.”

She’s a brave, inspiring person, yes, but she also admits that she doesn’t have it all figured out yet — and neither do any of us, really.

When Grace was given the chance to create her own show for AOL Originals, she jumped at the opportunity to reach out to all the people she had admired from afar over the years — other people dealing with gender dysphoria, an issue she had been grappling with for as long as she can remember. Over the course of touring with Against Me!, Grace spoke with different people every day — sometimes several interviews occurring each day — and learned that she’s not the only one in a constant state of flux and learning.

“It was really reassuring just hearing how varied everyone’s end-definition of what gender means to them is,” Grace told MTV News. “Reassuring in my own way in still trying to figure that out. Having other people say it who are further along in their transition or further along in life — [who] just have more experience — hearing them be like, ‘Well, I don’t ...
