Mack Wilds Wants You To Come To His ‘Crib’ But You’ll Have To Take The Staten Island Ferry

by 06/09/14

If you’re a Grammy-nominated R&B singer/actor trying to impress a girl you just met, I guess you could charter a luxury yacht for a day and take her out on the Hudson. But if you’re Mack Wilds, navigating the sometimes-choppy waters that follow cuffing season, you know that the simplest approach is often the most romantic.

Who needs big toys when you can take a free sunset ride on the Staten Island Ferry? For girls who’ve seen it all, done it all, a low-key date can spark the highest returns. And that’s just what Mack does in his new video for “My Crib,” directed by Fatima Curry and premiered Monday (June 9) on MTV.com.

The Salaam Remi and Bink-produced track off the 24-year-old’s debut album, New York: A Love Story, finds Mack enticing a lady-friend to come kick it at his place. But first, the Shaolin native tells her to meet him downtown, in New York’s Financial District, where they can link up.

In the clip, Mack and his leading lady lock hands and kick off their maritime adventure stopping for kisses on the stairway. And as the camera flashes to expansive views of the city at dusk, he croons exquisite game:

“You’re looking like the perfect love song/ Girl, you got me going with your clothes on.”

If that’s not enough to make you gush, check the just-dropped remix, featuring Pusha T.

The Merch At Governors Ball 2014 Will Totally Make Your FOMO Flare Up

by 06/08/14

RANDALL’S ISLAND, New York — OK, so you’ve danced with yourself at the silent disco, ticked “see Outkast live” off your bucket list and partied your face off like it was 2001 with hometown heroes the Strokes on the Gov Ball stage. Now all you need is the physical, envy-inducing proof that you did all those things.

The three-day festival on Randall’s Island wraps up on Sunday (June 8), and their merch tent has you covered. We had a friendly chat with Bobby Love of the Charlottesville, Virginia-based Red Star Merchandise who told us on Saturday that some of the fast-selling items included the colorful tank tops — guys and girls grabbed these in equal numbers — as well as a grey Governors Ball souvenir tee stamped with the map of New York.

Andre 3000 And His Son Went To Childish Gambino’s Gov Ball Show Because Of Course: See The Pics

by 06/08/14

RANDALL’S ISLAND, New York — Childish Gambino gave new meaning to the line “Instagram my stack load” when none other than Three Stacks himself snuck into the photo pit at Governors Ball, giving us a ‘Gram-worthy shot that we just can’t “like” enough.

Taking in the show among a sea of ‘Bino fans on a sticky Saturday night (June 7), the overall-clad Outkast MC was joined by his adorable son, Seven Benjamin. No shade at all the amazing dads out there, but Erykah Badu’s teen son might have the COOLEST DAD EVER. Because how many 16-year-olds hit up Childish Gambino concerts with their pops? A day after said pops kicks off a raucous headlining set at the same festival? Exactly.

MTV News’ own hip-hop writer-turned-snap master Adam Fleischer caught the close-ups of the stylish father-son duo enjoying Gambino’s high-energy set. And it just seems fitting that the introverted ATLien with a taste for statement-making ensembles would be into the multi-hyphenate Camp rapper’s digitally flavored output.

Never mind that Dre’s not currently on any known form social media: He’s a martian, and so is Childish.

But Andre 3000 wasn’t the only must-see MC to make an appearance at ‘Bino’s show. Fresh off his own electrifying run under the Gotham tent earlier the same day, a still-shirtless Chance ...

Chance The Rapper And ’90s Babies Turn Up To The ‘Arthur’ Theme Song At Governors Ball

by 06/07/14

RANDALL’S ISLAND, New York — There were no surprise cameos — not from fellow fest performer Childish Gambino nor hometown rapper Action Bronson — but Chance the Rapper didn’t need them anyway. Backed by a live band, the Save Money MC electrified the crowd at this year’s Governors Ball with a mid-afternoon set that elevated not only his year-old, critically acclaimed Acid Rap tape but also a throwback fave that had ’90s babies legit losing it.

Chano seemed to register how much he was connecting too: He paused toward the end of his set, under the expansive Gotham Tent, to tell fans that “real talk,” this festival was “the dopest sh–” he’d ever been a part of. Like a real-life rap superhero — dressed in a White Sox jersey he peeled off to reveal a Superman tee — the 21-year-old Chicago MC powered through 2013 mixtape standouts like “Juice” and “Cocoa Butter Kisses.”

I guess if Chance had a special power, it would be reminding us that hip-hop hasn’t merely been reduced to “the signal pop-music genre of its time,” it’s utterly essential. So he sang, spit and we wailed along. Especially when he trotted out a rendition of the feel-good theme to the animated series “Arthur,” childhood classic for millenials everywhere.

But what really seemed to leave a lasting impression among festival-goers is that the 2014 XXL Freshman is already putting on a show that could rival some ...

Why Is Andre 3000 Wearing A ‘Sold Out’ Sign At The Outkast Festival Shows?

by 06/07/14

RANDALL’S ISLAND, New York — There are experiences you just can’t assign a dollar value to. Your first kiss, getting that bulky acceptance letter to your dream college and moving out of your parents’ house to a crowded three-bedroom that you and your roommates can finally call your own come to mind. And after hitting the Governors Ball kickoff in NYC on Friday, I’ve already added seeing Outkast perform to that short-list of unforgettable moments. But would ATLien Andre 3000 beg to differ?

I’m not the only one who was left chuckling but also scratching my head over Three Stacks’ curious ensemble choice at Gov Ball. Celebrating 20 years in the rap game alongside his partner Big Boi, Dre has been rocking a series of custom, shiny black statement jumpsuits as he criss-crosses the country for 40-plus-shows on a festival run. While the cheeky captions emblazoned across his chest have changed from city to city, the giant red “price tag” hanging from his waist has become a permanent attachment.

2014 Bottlerock Music Festival

The tag, which features a dollar sign, and on the reverse, the words SOLD OUT, prompts so many questions. Especially since it’s been reported that ‘Kast — coming of a decade-long hiatus — stand to bank about $60 million on this summer tour.

So does Andre Benjamin — one of the best lyricists of our time and mustachioed Gillette pitchman — believe he’s sold out by reuniting with his once-estranged ...

Beyonce Skips Kim And Kanye Wedding, Sends Congrats On Instagram

by 05/24/14

Although we fully expected Jay would make the best bachelor party host of all time as his comrade-on-the-Throne, Kanye, prepared to jump the broom, it seems our fantasy of flowing D’usse, Cuban cigars and a GIANT castle was just that. Because As ‘Ye and his bride Kim Kardashian were exchanging vows in Italy, Mr. and Mrs. Carter appear to have been Stateside — getting ready for a Memorial Day weekend of Memorial Day ” target=”_blank”>grown-folks’ music and barbecue.

At least that’s what Beyonce‘s busy online activity on Saturday (May 24) leads us to believe. The “XO” singer debuted a summer look of golden-hued, waist-grazing micro-braids this morning, puckering up to the camera and dressed in a black tank that seemed not at all like wedding attire. Bey went on to post a playlist to her tumblr that was showed she was gearing up to grill.

But our suspicions that the Carters had — like chief editor Anna Wintour — missed the “wedding of the year” were basically confirmed when Bey sent her Instragram congrats to the newlyweds, posting a photo from the couple’s April 2014 Vogue shoot. We presume that the wishes for a “lifetime of unconditional love” were implicitly signed, The Carters.

Wiz Khalifa’s ‘Rain’ Drops And Taylors Think That’s ‘Dope’: Listen

by 05/24/14

Wiz Khalifa understands how badly Taylors want that 28 Grams he’s been promising. So with his mixtape release still looming, he dropped a track that should be just the fix you need.

“Rain” pops off with Trap Wiz unapologetically nodding to his daily kush habit and complaining about how he can’t stand “fake n—as.” As Missy Elliott’s Timbaland-produced ’90s classic “(The Rain) Supa Dupa Fly” provides the backdrop, the ‘Burgh MC mouths off.

“Clique full of psychos/ Goon in some tight clothes / Me? my paper’s straight, no typos,” Wiz boasts before expounding on his work ethic. “I’m in the studio all night / Make sure the sh– you call a dream is what I really call my life.”

When we caught up with Wiz earlier this month in Anaheim, California, he told us his 28 Grams tape is shaping up to be a classic, in line with offerings like his Cabin Fever series and Kush and Orange Juice. And he hinted at why the free projects tend to get the reception they do.

“I feel like all my mixtapes, they just speak to the time that I’m at in my life,” the Taylor Gang captain explained, “as well as my albums do, but I get to be a little more free and [have] more fun with my mixtapes. I’m more experimenting with albums.”

Kelis Says It’s Funny To See Who Her Son Knight Is Becoming

by 05/07/14

There’s a lot to digest in KelisFood album. I mean, can we discuss the grand sweep of “Forever Be”? Or the oh-so-cozy cover with Sal Masekela of Labi Saffre‘s “Bless the Telephone,” an acoustic duet bound for an Apple iPhone ad if their marketing department has any sense. The inevitable guessing game that “Rumble” prods you into playing. And then there are the lyrical revelations wrapped in sunny trumpets.

But when Kelis visited MTV News just a few days after the release of her sixth LP in late April, I knew if nothing, I had to ask her about “Breakfast.” (No, not the poached egg variety!) The star of the Cooking Channel’s “Saucy & Sweet” tapped TV on the Radio guitarist and sought-after producer Dave Sitek to helm her grub-themed project, and the standout track is one of the most filling. Not just because it opens with her adorable 4-year old son, Knight, posing a layered question, but also for what the 34-year-old shares about lessons in love.

“I look at my little one, and it’s just funny to see who he’s becoming,” Kelis revealed of her pint-size co-star, who can be heard asking in the open, “Hey guys, are you hungry?/ My mom made Food.”

She giggled as she added of her tot with rapper/ex-husband Nas, “I realize that he does certain things, and it makes me laugh, and I’m like, ‘Who are you? Where’d you get that from?!’ And then people will see him and they’re like, ‘He’s ...
