Back when Ben Affleck was cast as the Dark Knight in Warner Bros’ yet-untitled sequel to “Man of Steel,” those who disagreed with the pick offered various reasons for why the Oscar winner was wrong for the role. Chief among these explanations was the failure of Affleck’s last super-heroic effort, “Daredevil.”
But in a new interview with Playboy, Affleck revealed that the 2003 Marvel movie, which also starred his now-wife Jennifer Garner, may be one of the reasons why he agreed to play Bruce Wayne in the first place.
“The only movie I actually regret is ‘Daredevil.’ It just kills me,” Affleck said. “I love that story, that character, and the fact that it got f***ed up the way it did stays with me. Maybe that’s part of the motivation to do Batman.”
Another reason Affleck took on the Caped Crusader was that after he expressed his doubts, director Zack Snyder’s work convinced him. “When they asked if I would be Batman, I told them I don’t see myself in the role and I was going to have to beg off,” he said. “They said I’d fit well into how they were going to approach the character and asked me to look at what the writer-director, Zack Snyder, was doing. The stuff was incredible.”
Careful not to give too many details away about the new version of Bruce Wayne, Affleck also made it clear that the new take would not compete with Christian Bale’s interpretation. And while he understands the fanboys’ confusion about him landing the part, Affleck is confident that it will make sense when people finally see the movie.
“I don’t want to give away too much, but the idea for the new Batman is to redefine him in a way that doesn’t compete with Bale and Christopher Nolan’s Batman but still exists within the Batman canon. It will be an older and wiser version, particularly as he relates to Henry Cavill’s Superman character,” he said. “It was a unique take on Batman that was still consistent with the mythology. It made me excited. All of a sudden, I had a reading of the character. When people see it, it will make more sense than it does now or even than it did to me initially.”
The “Man of Steel” sequel starring Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck will hit theaters on July 17, 2015.
