The Cannes film festival is known for bringing us some of the most exciting films from the most interesting filmmakers, and this year’s lineup looks no different.
With the festival officially kicking off Wednesday (May 15), we take a look at the lineup to preview our most anticipated movies at Cannes and a rundown of the stars likely to walk the red carpet.
“The Bling Ring”
Who: MTV Movie Awards Trailblazer Emma Watson
What: The true-life story of a group of L.A. teens who live the Hollywood life by breaking into the homes of the rich and famous.
Why: After a special audience got a preview at MTV Sneak Peek Week, we’ve been dying to see what kind of trouble the former “Harry Potter” star gets into for her biggest departure to date.
“Only God Forgives”
Who: Ryan Gosling and his “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn
What: A neon-soaked, violent crime drama set in Bangkok that reunites the team behind 2011’s cult hit.
Why: The trailer ends with Gosling asking, “Wanna fight?,” and then circling the camera as he rolls up his sleeves. That’s why.
“Inside Llewyn Davis”
Who: Oscar Isaacs, Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake, with the Coen brothers directing
What: The tale of a Dylan-inspired 1960s folk singer as he wanders through New York City.
Why: Any Coen brothers flick is a must-see, but this one boasts a cast and a premise that feels like a home run.
“Nebraska”
Who: “Saturday Night Live” star Will Forte and Bruce Dern, directed by Alexander Payne
What: A father and son travel to Nebraska in order to claim a sweepstakes prize.
Why: Payne has consistently delivered hilarious and touching films. Pairing him with Forte is an inspired choice.
“As I Lay Dying”
Who: James Franco and Danny McBride
What: An adaptation of the literary masterpiece by William Faulkner.
Why: Say what you will about Franco’s many projects, but tackling what is thought to be an un-adaptable book takes some guts.
“Behind the Candelabra”
Who: Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, with director Steven Soderbergh
What: A real-life look at the relationship between famed pianist Liberace and his younger lover.
Why: Soderbergh has officially retired from making movies (this doesn’t count, since it’s premiering on HBO), so we’re taking every opportunity we get to see him work, especially when it looks this good.
“Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”
Who: Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara, directed by David Lowery
What: An outlaw escapes from custody and attempts to reunite with his wife and child.
Why: This slow burn wowed audiences at Sundance in January and put its director on the radar as one of the hottest up-and-coming talents.
“Only Lovers Left Alive”
Who: Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton, directed by Jim Jarmusch
What: The two leads star as romantically linked vampires.
Why: Did you not read the “what” part? Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as vampires in love.
