Alexander Wang’s Boxing Gloves Join A Legacy Of High-Fashion Sports Gear

by 40 mins ago

Yesterday, H&M and Alexander Wang launched their highly-coveted collaboration. The wunderkind designer/Balenciaga creative head/sneaker aficionado gave his fans exactly what they wanted: a collaboration that looks like it could have walked down the runway for his namesake line. It reads as a reprisal of the designer’s sportiest hits. This being Alexander Wang—the man who invented the 15-pound bucket bag and brought back the style—the accessories were all on-point. But one of them stood out more than others: a pair of logo-centric boxing gloves—the type of fashionable whim you’d only expect to see on the runway or in a lookbook.

Yet, Wang isn’t the only designer to put a spin on sporting goods. Though he’s been doing it now for seasons, having also created a $135 gold-tipped jump rope, yoga mats, and pool toys—in all black, of course—Wang’s love of sports is shared by his contemporaries. Here are some of the most luxurious sporting goods on the market.

King of absurdity Karl Lagerfeld recently made headlines for one of his most outlandish moves yet—and that’s saying a lot—a Louis Vuitton punching bag. No it’s not a punch line (heh), his monogrammed leather device that’s used for hitting repeatedly will set you back $175,000.

by 8 mins ago

These days, your Twitter timeline says as much about you as your taste in movies or fashion sense, and ours is chock full o’ MTV greatness. Between the intriguing “Teen Wolf” stars and the “Code” jokesters, our network’s cast members always have a ton to share on social media. And each week, we’re rounding up the posts that had us RTing like crazy. Check out the latest!

When DJ Pauly D‘s in party mode, he can reduce bars and clubs to rubble. But now, he can make ‘em all squeaky clean again!

The “Jersey Shore” star, who recently mentioned Pine-Sol on Twitter, got the surprise of his life when the product’s parent company Clorox reflexively sent him two bottles of his very own “Pauly-Sol.” There was also a note explaining the solution was meant to keep things “fresh to death.”

Seriously. Pauly D’s a cleaning agent now.

“So This Just Happened !!! Lol Thankyou @Clorox !!! #PineSol #Pine-Sol #Pauly-Sol,” Pauly tweeted with a photo of the care package. Clorox responded “@DJPaulyD Pauly-Sol might just be the freshest scent we’ve ever made. Enjoy.” How soluble do you think it is?

Also on Twitter, Shalyah Evans of “Girl Code” owned up to some strange hunger pangs, while Deena Cortese found joking about one newsworthy topic totally distasteful. And though JWOWW laid down the regimen for bright, bronzy skin, Michael Willett insisted “Faking Itguest star Laverne Cox‘s ...

This Is Why Eminem Is The Best Battle Rapper Ever

by 3 mins ago

At its very core, hip-hop is competitive. In the late-1970s, pioneering MCs started out boasting about their DJs’ supremacy during park jams, before developing their own (alter)egos and rivalries among each other.

These days, battle rap has reached new heights with fans paying big bucks to watch their favorite matches in a Pay-Per-View-style format. And network and music executives have fed the beast, booking lyrical titans for awards show performances, right alongside their platinum-selling counterparts.

Guys like Murda Mook, Loaded Lux, Arsonal, Daylyt, Charlie Clips and the organizers of the Smack and URL battle leagues deserve all the credit; but when it’s all said and done, it’s Eminem who reigns as battle rap’s best.

Marshall’s 2002 film “8 Mile” was partly-based on real-life events, and the battle scenes vividly captured Em’s come-up. In fact, it was Eminem’s second-place finish finish at the 1997 Rap Olympics that helped land him on Interscope and, eventually, Dr. Dre’s radar. And we all know what happened after that.

Eminem dropped his major-label debut album, The Slim Shady LP, in 1999 and never looked back. He’s sold more records than any other hip-hop artist, thanks to his classic albums and unforgettable singles like “Lose Yourself,” “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie.” For the most successful rapper in the world to be birthed from an underground battle circuit speaks volumes.

The game’s top rap-battle stars have been trying to figure out ...

The Reviews Are In: Does ‘Birdman’ Soar Or Sink?

by 10 mins ago

The movie may be called “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” but it won’t do you any good to be ignorant of this new release, already gathering awards buzz for its A-list cast, bizarre script and brilliant cinematography. Almost the entire movie, through tricks of the camera and editing, appears to be one continuous tracking shot.

Starring Michael Keaton as a washed-up former action movie star now setting his sights to the stage, while dealing with a mercurial lead actor (Edward Norton), a worried business partner (Zach Galifianakis) and a freshly rehabbed daughter (Emma Stone), among others, “Birdman” is decidedly offbeat. The man is literally haunted by the specter of his most famous character muttering nasty nothings about what he thinks of the actor’s life.

Now that the Alejandro Iñárritu-directed movie is flying into theaters, the critics have spoken. Here’s what they have to say about “Birdman.”

The More You Know, The Better
“The more you know, the more fun it’ll be — all real-life connections fodder for other connections as the film shreds time, fame, family and the difference between movie acting and stage acting. That one-continuous-tracking shot conceit is designed to split the difference, forcing the actors to play through long stretches — no cuts to protect them — as the camera zips after them down hallways, into theaters empty and full, and, at one deliriously funny point, out into a Times Square mobbed with celebrity-chasers. But it’s also a stupendously choreographed bit of camerawork, demanding ...

Laverne Cox Opens Up About Her First Time Wearing A Dress And Other Style Milestones

by 12 mins ago

From being the first openly trans female nominated for an Emmy to landing the cover of TIME Magazine, Laverne Cox is no stranger to transgender milestones.

But before she was the trailblazer we know her as today, Laverne struggled with several aspects of her identity—personal style being a bullet point on that list. There are times when fashion can be fairly inconsequential, but when it’s wrapped up in your ability to express your true self, it can carry significant weight.

“I was terrified of wearing a dress because my third grade teacher Ms. Ridgeway said I would end up in New Orleans wearing a dress,” Laverne told MTV News.

Now, the Orange is the New Black star doesn’t shy away from showing a little leg, but getting there took some time. When we caught up with the actress, who was promoting her new doc The T Word, she walked us through her fashion turning points, including her first dress, pair of heels and weave.

‘Entourage’ Totally Predicted Lady Gaga’s Jazz Reinvention In 2008: Watch

by 35 mins ago

A pop star seeks to reinvent her image by teaming up with Tony Bennett. No, I’m not talking about Lady Gaga, who released an entire album of duets with the legendary jazz singer titled Cheek To Cheek back in September. What I’m referring to is an actual subplot from an episode of HBO’s “Entourage,” which aired back in 2008. Seriously.

The immortal Blair Waldorf Leighton Meester plays Justine Chapin, a recurring character who dates Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) for a couple of episodes in Season 1. There’s definitely some early-’00s Britney Spears-meets-Jessica Simpson inspiration at play — she’s known in the industry for her vow to “save herself for marriage.”

Flash-forward to Season 5, and Justine and Vince cross paths once more. She’s “shooting a video for my new album,” she tells him, before adding the disclaimer: “Don’t make fun. I know my music isn’t really your thing, but this is way different. It’s very sophisticated. Grown-up. I’m doing Duets with Tony Bennett.”

Oh my God, what in the name of “Sophisticated Lady”? How is this a real thing that happened? Up is down. Left is right. Suddenly the Koons is ANYTHING. Psychics wrote this episode. What did Nostradamus see? Bye.

HOW. DID. THEY. KNOW.

Fall Out Boy’s ‘Centuries’ Video Is Basically ‘Gladiator II’

by 46 mins ago

Remember Fall Out Boy‘s epic new single, “Centuries”? Well, it just got an equally epic music video. And we do mean epic.

A classic story of the little guy versus the giant, the video sees the band facing off — gladiator-style — against a massive monster with murder in its eyes.

“Getting back up. Dusting it off. My dad used to tell me the most important part of any of it was getting back up on the horse –- I didn’t grow up on a farm –- but it still applied,” Pete Wentz said of the video’s themes. “David vs. Goliath, us vs. them, you vs. the world… brains, talent and luck are great but heart will always trump them. That is the sentiment of this video.”

Replete with lions, loincloths and tons of religious imagery, “Centuries” culminates in a massive fight to the death — with Rick Ross stepping in at the end for a surprise, and twisted, cameo.

We’ll be watching this video — and listening to Fall Out Boy’s other single, “Immortals” — for centuries… or at least until the band’s as-yet-unnamed record drops.

Channing Tatum: My Baby Is ‘Immersed’ In The World Of ‘Magic Mike XXL’

by 8 mins ago

With reporting by Josh Horowitz.

Actors often strive to build up diverse bodies of work, and Channing Tatum is among them. After all, he’s played strippers and college students, street dancers and macho little cartoon soldiers (like in the new “The Book of Life,” out today).

There’s just one little hitch in the plan: now he has a kid, and that kid will someday have both the dexterity and the access to watch all of those movies on whatever replaces Blu-ray players in the future.

“The PSA just goes like this: Everly, I’m sorry,” Tatum said, when asked what he’d like to tell his daughter when she’s old enough to see his movies.

Tatum, who said that he’d show his infant daughter his latest family-friendly movie now — not that she’d remember it — ran through highlights of his filmography and guessed how old Everly would have to be to see them. For the “Jump Street” movies, for example, “there’s a lot of bad words in that, and some vulgarness, so I’d say 14, 15.”

You may be surprised, however, at when he’ll let her see “Magic Mike” and the upcoming “Magic Mike XXL.” That would appear to be… now.

“Look, she’s on the set of number two,” Tatum told MTV News. “We’ve just decided alright, we’re gonna immerse her in it from day one of that world so I don’t ever have to sit her down and say, ‘we need to have a talk.’”

“The Book Of Life” is in theaters ...

It’ll Be Hard To Find A Native American Headdress At This Festival

by 17 mins ago

At 2015′s Glastonbury music festival you will likely not be able to purchase such incendiary devices as: cigarettes, flares and Native American headdresses.

Yup, the U.K. fest is just the latest in a growing number of organizations that are perking up their ears and taking note when Native people point out that something seemingly innocuous is actually offensive. You know, like putting on a sacred piece of ceremonial garb and twerking on a muddy field.

The restrictions on the sale of headdresses came about after U.K. citizen Daniel Round created a Change.org petition, according to The Guardian.

Related: Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Wear A Native American Headdress

“There has long been consensus among indigenous civil rights activists in North America about the wearing of headdresses by non-Natives — that it is an offensive and disrespectful form of cultural appropriation, that it homogenises diverse indigenous peoples, and that it perpetuates damaging, archaic and racist stereotypes,” Round wrote in the petition.

Only 65 people signed the digital document, but that was apparently enough to tip the fest organizers’ hands. There has been no public statement on the issue, however; headdresses have merely been added to the list of things you cannot sell at the fest “without prior authorisation or discussion with the markets’ management” — right after flags and before gazebos.

This isn’t the first time headdresses have been effectively banned from a fest. The Bass Coast Festival in Canada previously nixed war bonnets from their event partly because ...
