Best Of The 2014 BET Hip Hop Awards: Mike Brown Tribute, Bobby Shmurda And Uncle Snoop

by 19 mins ago

I’ve covered many awards shows, but on Saturday night I was finally able to sit down and enjoy a show in person — since it was pre-taped, I didn’t have to work live — and the 2014 Bet Hip Hop Awards was a pretty good place to start. It felt more like a family affair, than a stiff black tie event. The show airs October 14, at 8 p.m. ET. on BET, but here’s a preview of what went down on Saturday, at the Civic Center in Atlanta.

Shurmda Stole The Show
Atlanta was very present on stage Saturday — with performances from T.I., Young Thug, Rich Homie Quan, Migos and Rae Sremmurd — but somehow it was Bobby Shmurda who really had the crowd going nuts. Shmurda was the only performer of the night who had everyone on their feet before he even started rapping. It was a mob scene when he launched into “Hot N—a,” with his GS9 creqw joining him, and Lil TeRio dancing his a$$ off in up front. The Brooklyn rapper was so excited, that he even flipped the mic and dropped it for a second. No big deal though, Snoop was on the other side of the stage distracting everyone else with his own Shmoney Dance.

Kiesza Teams Up With Joey Bada$$, Messy Emotional Stuff Ensues

by 1 min ago

Kiesza slows things down considerably on her new song, which, despite the title, really isn’t a “Bad Thing” for her to do at all.

“Danger when you make me ‘Ooooo,’” the “Hideaway” singer moans about some lover lovah she just can’t keep her hands off of — even though she probably should — before finally concluding: “But I think that’s a good thing.”

Featured artist Joey Bada$$ comes in to commiserate with our resident ’90s-House enthusiast. “Deluded by these illusions,” “dancing with this little devil” — ummmm, at least you’ve got each other?

The haunting, Pop/R&B track comes to us from Kiesza’s upcoming debut album, Sound Of A Woman, which is expected to drop on October 21. Along with an acoustic version of breakout single “Hideaway,” the 14-track LP will also include “Losin’ My Mind,” a collaboration with Mick Jenkins that K debuted live in New York City back in July.

And that’s a good thing.

Bad at filling out bios seeks same.

Scooter Braun May Bring His Musical Friends To ‘Scorpion’

by 23 mins ago

By Charles Webb

Scooter Braun is confident “Scorpion” can stand on its own. The producer for the CBS genius drama thinks the hour-long series will be able to survive without gimmicks like celebrity cameos… But in his other role as a music talent manager, he’s got some of his clients interested in making an appearance on the new series, which makes its debut tonight (September 22).

“The most important thing I want to do is let the show speak for itself,” Braun told MTV News on the red carpet for the show, at the Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. “If you make a really good TV show, you don’t need any other gimmicks.”

The School Boy Records owner – home to acts like Justin Bieber, Airana Grande, and Carly Rae Jepsen – isn’t saying “no” to cameos to any of the acts he manages.

“There’s definitely been a lot of interest from our friends,” Braun said. “A lot of our acts and friends of mine are intrigued by the show and would love to be a part of it.”

Explaining how he was drawn to the series, Braun said that it was after meeting the inspiration for “Scorpion,” Walter O’Brien, that he was interested in tackling this series about a collection of brilliant minds trying to solve the world’s unsolvable problems. Elyes Gabel (“World War Z,” “Interstellar”) plays O’Brien in the series alongside Katherine McPhee (“Smash”), Eddie Kaye Thomas (“American Pie”), Robert Patrick (“Terminator 2″).

One Direction And Ed Sheeran Confirm That They’ve Teamed Up Once Again!

by 29 mins ago

They gave us some sweet “Moments,” and told us all those lovely “Little Things,” and now One Direction and Ed Sheeran are ready to make sweet music together again.

1D and Ed both confirmed at the iHeart Radio Music festival that a Sheeran song is slated to appear on the group’s upcoming album, Four.

“I got a call from [Simon] Cowell the other day,” Ed said about the song being on the album. “But you never know, it might happen last minute where it’s taken off, like that’s how it works in this industry, so you never know.”

Back in June, during “Live From MTV,” Ed revealed that he wrote a “whole lot of songs” that were “completely different” for the guys, including a song that had a “stadium rock” sound.

Louis and Zayn from 1D told us that the song will be on the album, but we aren’t sure the big rock anthem was the one that made the cut, since Louis described it as “more slow then stadium rock.”

“The one that he wrote, more of a ballad,” Zayn said. “But I think we are going in that kind of lane. It sounds cool, we’ll take that.”

12 Unanswered Questions that Prove We Need Another ‘Veronica Mars’ Movie

by 4 mins ago

After seven years without “Veronica Mars,” fans had plenty of questions. When the Kickstarter-funded movie made its debut in March, many of them were answered — including that whole Piz vs. Logan debate, kind of — but, of course, many lingered at the end of the film.

Since we can’t wait until that sequel is greenlit for all the answers, we’ve rounded up some of our biggest burning questions here. Hopefully creator Rob Thomas will chime in, whether with a secret behind-the-scenes video of the Veronica and Logan spin-off we’re waiting for… or maybe just a scene in the real spin-off, “Play It Again, Dick” on CW Seed.

1. Where in the world is Duncan Kane?

Duncan Kane in Veronica MarsWarner Bros.

Thomas pointed out that it wouldn’t make sense for Duncan Kane to just show up at the reunion after fleeing to Mexico with his kidnapped baby in Season 2, but he wasn’t even mentioned in the “Veronica Mars” movie. Since Clarence Wiedman killed Aaron Echolls under Duncan’s orders, he probably knows where Duncan is, right? Has no one used new technology to track him down? Seems unlikely.

2. And what about Jake Kane? Is Veronica done with him, too?

In Season 3, Veronica discovered that Jake headed up a secret society full of some of the most powerful men in Neptune and sent Hearst College boys to release her sex tape. When ...

‘Gotham’ Cast Does Their Best Christian Bale Batman Voices

by 3 mins ago

Tonight (September 22), FOX premieres “Gotham,” a look at DC Comics’ fabled city in a time before The Dark Knight took to the skies. But even with the prequel nature of the show, Batman looms large over everything… including the red carpet.

So naturally, when MTV News hit up the show’s big premiere event in New York, we asked the cast of “Gotham” – including young Bruce Wayne himself (David Mazouz) – to tell us why we should watch their show. The only catch? Sell the show using their best Christian Bale as Batman voice.

Hilarity, as they say, ensued (and for the record, we think Erin Richards, who plays Barbara Kean on the show, won the bat-off).

“Gotham” premieres tonight at 8 p.m. ET.

Sorry, But You’re Probably Reading Rotten Tomatoes Wrong

by 34 mins ago

Rotten Tomatoes has built an express lane for finding out whether a movie sucks or will change your life. The service has become the standard for critical opinion now that there are thousands of movie reviews published every week — and without celebrity voices like Roger Ebert around anymore — because of how easy it is to use. You don’t have to go further than the site’s front page to get an instant snapshot of a given week’s releases.

But those percentages and tomato icons may not mean what you think.

Understanding the Meter
To calculate a Tomatometer percentage, the site rounds up reviews by critics who have been approved based on set criteria. According to a rep for the site, critics designate whether their reviews are considered positive (fresh) or negative (rotten), and in cases where it’s more difficult to tell, the Rotten Tomatoes editorial staff reaches out to critics for clarification.

The number of positive reviews is then divided by the total number of write-ups considered, and then you get the movie’s Tomatometer rating.

People love Rotten Tomatoes because it’s easy to use. The Tomatometer gives the false sense of understanding many knowledgeable opinions by looking at a single number. That percentage and the Fresh status that can come with it (anything over 60 percent) have become highly regarded measures of film quality to the point where DVD covers boast of the certification and it’s a fanboy rage-inducing act to ruin a movie’s perfect score.

The problem is that ...

It’s been 10 years since “Lost” went off the air, and if you’re a hardcore fan, there hasn’t been a day where you still have not thought constantly about the island. Like, constantly. Get it? Constant?

And it isn’t just about all the mysteries, either: it’s that a decade on, there are things big, and small that will drive you crazier than Libby off her meds if you just let the non-hardcores get to you.

42. Posting the number 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, or 42 anywhere.

We Challenged Gunther From ‘Friends’ To Spell These Tough Names Right

by 27 mins ago

By now, we all know from experience that whatever name you give at the coffee shop, chances are, it’s not going to match what comes back on your cup. While a steaming hot latte is a great consolation prize, there’s no feeling like seeing your name, your actual name, on the cup.

Of course, Gunther, the infamously surly barista from “Friends,” which celebrates the 20th anniversary of its premiere this week, would probably spell your name wrong on purpose.

We put James Michael Tyler, the actor who played the Central Perk manager for a decade and served many a latte concoction to the likes of Phoebe, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Ross, knows this better than anyone. We put Tyler to the test behind the bar of the Central Perk pop-up shop in New York City. Could he put his Sharpie where his mouth was when it came time to mark drinks for the likes of Ursula Buffay and Quvenzhane Wallis?

Find out in the clip below.
