‘True Detective’ Season 2 Officially Has Its Lead

by 27 mins ago

Conclude your meme games, people – #TrueDetectiveSeason2 has its new lead: Colin Farrell!

The actor confirmed that he’ll be starring in the second season of the hit HBO series while speaking with the Sunday World. “I’m doing the second series,” he said. “I’m so excited.”

This culminates a months-long whirlwind of cast rumors, which most recently included Rosario Dawson and Jessica Biel – though it’s possible they’re in the running as his co-partners. Because what is a true detective if not a two-way battering ram for writer Nic Pizzolatto’s mind-bending banter?

Farrell and the rest of his yet-to-be-announced cast will be true detecting all up in your eyeballs next summer. Time may be a flat circle, but production schedules are Carcosa-esque tangles.

The 19 Stages Of Catching Up On ‘Scandal’

by 4 mins ago

With the return of political thriller “Scandal” upon us on September 25, there are no doubt some among us who have taken it upon themselves to stream past episodes and catch up on the show’s history. Yes, Virginia, there are people out there who haven’t been avidly watching the ups and downs of Olivia Pope and Co. for the past three years. I know.

Much like any major life event (marriages, graduations, accepting that the “Dance Moms” girl really is in that Sia video), marathoning “Scandal” for the first time comes with its own set of complex emotional stages. There’s the thrill of first love, the contentment of getting comfortable with something, disbelief when you’re surprised, and the inevitable grief that there’s just no more. And grief, as we learned from “The Fault In Our Stars,” demands to be felt. Feel it, man.

Ahead, the 19 stages of catching up with “Scandal.”

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD.

1. What’s this “Scandal” I’ve been hearing about? How scandalous could it possibly be?

2. There are only three seasons? Easy peasy.

3. OK, so that’s Olivia. Sure. I’ve gotta start getting my ish tailored.

4. Oh, he’s the president? Dayum. Oh, this is gonna be stressful.

5. Your gut is always wrong, Olivia.

6. Voting…machines?

7. “President Langston”?!

8. Well, guess everyone’s a murderer. Literally everyone.

9. Get on the plane, Olivia. That’s not a plane, Olivia.

10. Why are you in the president’s bunker, Olivia?

Watch This Man Remain Impossibly Zen While Being Attacked By A Swan

by 1 min ago

Whether partaking in a ‘Game of Thrones’-themed attack or destroying an attempted selfie, it’s clear that swans make a habit of being poised at all times to create mischief for us humans – to hilarious effect.

This latest entry in the centuries-long bird-versus-biped battle really ups the ante – it pits a wildlife rescuer against a protective daddy swan. Wildlife Aid Foundation released a video of employee Simon attempting to rescue a trapped cygnet (that’s baby swan, to you) from a fence while concurrently staving off the little one’s irate dad.

What’s most amazing about this video (aside from the fact that OMG SWANS ARE TERRIFYING) is Simon’s impossibly cool, calm, collected demeanor as he’s being beat up by a massive bird (seriously, look at the wingspan on this thing – it’s the length of an adult human’s body!)

Watch the full video, and bask in Simon’s zen-like glow. From approaching the situation with a casual, “Alright, this is where I’ll likely get attacked,” to wagging his finger and chastising, “Don’t be silly” as the swan batters his arm and hisses at him, to chanting, “There’s a good boy” as he staves off an attack while attempting to return the rescued baby to its father.

Someone get the UN on the horn – we’re pretty sure Simon could negotiate world peace.

This Son Granted His Mother’s Last Wish 3 Days Before Her Death

by 3 mins ago

Feel like crying? Well then you’ve clicked on the right post because this one is an emotional doozy. Meet Ryan Manning and his mother Mary Ann Manning — the mother/son duo dancing in the video below. A wedding dance that would in turn be Mary Ann’s last, as she lost her long battle with cancer a mere three days after the event.

See? We told you this one had all of the feels.

Mary Ann’s managing of the feat was impressive not simply because of her diagnosis, but because she’d been confined to a wheelchair in the months leading up to the wedding.

At the reception Ryan and Mary Ann danced to Israel Ka’ano’i Kamakawiwo’ole’s ukulele-based rendition of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” — is anyone reading this NOT at least tearing up at this point? — the one thing she’d told family and friends she’d been living for these past few months.

Exactly 72 hours after the ceremony started, Mary Ann had passed away.

Now everyone go hug your mom and tell them you love them.

Too much exuberance for one person. Follow her on Twitter @alicialutes.

We Talked To The Cool Kids At The Climate March, And What They Had To Say Will Inspire You

by 14 mins ago

With reporting by Rachel Paoletta

The People’s Climate March in New York City on Sunday was overwhelming, to say the least — but not because I was getting trampled or confused or anything like that. The march was overwhelming because it’s the only place I’ve seen that many people united for one thing: Mother Nature.

There were people of all sizes, races, ages, disabilities and ethnicities. They came from all over. Some of them hopped on the subway to get to the Central Park meeting place; some people flew; some roadtripped. We met a brother and sister from Vancouver Island — that’s 3,000 miles away!

We asked the young people among the thousands of marchers why they were participating, and their answers were inspiring. Check it out:

James Franco and Seth Rogen Are Delightfully Crude In ‘The Interview’ Red Band Trailer

by 12 mins ago

What, you thought the guys who brought you “This Is The End” and “Neighbors” were going to leave it at one tame (albeit super funny) trailer back in June? Ye of little faith!

Obviously a film starring James Franco and Seth Rogen is going to be chock full of crude humor, so it’s all too fitting that “The Interview” just received the red band trailer treatment.

Behold: Franco and Rogen, basking in their success as tabloid reporters – covering everything from Rob Lowe’s severely receding hairline to Matthew McConaughey‘s illicit trysts with farm animals to Nicki Minaj‘s peek-a-boo nether regions – until they’re invited to interview North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.

We probably could’ve done with roughly 10% less discussion about Franco’s smelly genitals, but we still laughed. A lot. (And what’s up with that puppy rescue shot at the 2:23 mark? WE MUST KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS PLOT LINE.)

You’ll have to wait until Christmas to witness the full-circle story behind that “weapon of ass destruction,” but that just means you’ve got four months to get that dirty McConaughey hashtag trending!

This Box Of Doughnuts Is So Big You Could Sleep In It

by 8 mins ago

What would you do with a box of 2,400 donuts?? More like, what wouldn’t you do though right? Well, Krispy Kreme UK decided that putting together the biggest possible take on a dozen doughnuts they could muster would be a great marketing scheme. And you know what? They were right.

The doughnut company wanted to spotlight their new program called Krispy Kreme Occasions, which provides sweet, sticky treats fit for large gatherings.

So they created the Double Hundred Dozen, a box of doughnuts so big that you could eat all you wanted, sleep inside the box, and then wake up and eat some more for a good week or so.

Krispy Kreme

This thing is bigger than an actual bed.

Krispy Kreme

Then, they held a contest on Twitter to give away the ginormous box of deliciousness. The company that won, 360 Resourcing Solutions, celebrated in the most appropriate way ever: tweeting a picture of Homer Simpson salivating.

So the circle of doughnut-making, doughnut-giving and doughnut-appreciation is complete. Another feature of the Krispy Kreme Occasion menu? Donut Towers.

Seriously. I’m salivating again.

16 Deleted Scenes That Should Have Made The Final Cut

by 29 mins ago

Deleted scenes are hard to avoid. It doesn’t always come down to a simple need for a shorter movie. Sometimes a scene can slow the pace down too much or not mesh tonally with the other sequences.

Related: This ‘Frozen’ Deleted Scene Would Have Completely Changed The Movie

No matter the reason why they were cut, there are deleted scenes that are so good that it’s hard to believe anyone could approve removing them. I understand that sometimes there isn’t a choice, but it’s still unfortunate.

Though these great scenes were cut, they live on in the DVD extras and in the post below.

1. Boromir’s Story in “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers”

This flashback sequence lives on in the Extended Edition of “The Two Towers,” but it adds so much to Boromir, Faramir and Denethor that it’s a shame it didn’t make the theatrical cut.

2. The Mouth of Sauron in “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King”

While this sequence ripped straight from J.R.R. Tolkien’s book doesn’t add too much, besides another decapitation for the tally sheet, the creature effects are really cool.

3. Luke Talks to Biggs in “Star Wars”

Sometimes it’s not enough to be told that Luke and Biggs are best buds. This scene from early in “Star Wars” would have established the friendship sooner.

4. Luke Builds His Lightsaber in “Return of the Jedi”

It’s a small thing, but this scene of Luke tinkering with his green-bladed saber would have helped establish him as a Jedi ...

Gentlemen: Emma Watson Needs Your Help To Fight Gender Inequality

by 4 mins ago

Ladies have some pretty powerful allies on their side these days – from Taylor Swift to Beyonce to recently-appointed UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson. The Brown University graduate hasn’t wasted any time settling into her role – she’s already launched a new gender equality campaign.

Watson debuted “HeForShe” – a solidarity movement aimed at mobilizing men and boys in taking steps toward gender equality – at the UN Headquarters in New York yesterday.

“It is time that we all see gender as a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing ideals,” Watson explained. “We should stop defining each other by what we are not, and start defining ourselves by who we are.”

No surprise, here – Watson’s speech, which underscored the vital role men play in promoting women’s rights, earned her a standing ovation. The actress formally invited men to participate in the conversation, saying, “Gender equality is your issue, too.”

You can read a full transcript of Watson’s speech here, but we’ve pulled a few of our favorite mic drop moments:

“The more I spoke about feminism, the more I realized that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain is that this has to stop. For the record, feminism by definition is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of political, economic and social equality of the sexes.”

Didn’t we just ...

Ed Sheeran And Macklemore Performed ‘Same Love’ Together At The iHeartRadio Festival

by 14 mins ago

Last night during the second night of the iHeartRadio festival in Vegas, the stream of surprise guests continued.

Ed Sheeran brought out Macklemore to perform his gay rights anthem “Same Love” and the crowd loved the surprise.

Sheeran only had a five song set, so dedicating a big portion of that to bring out Macklemore for that particular song last night in Vegas it felt like a moment.

Macklemore handled the verses with his passionate, stutter-step rapping while Ed strummed along on acoustic guitar and joined in for the song’s poignant chorus that’s sung by Mary Lambert on the studio version.

The combination is spell-binding, moving tribute to one of our nation’s most important social justice issues of the moment. Watch the fan-shot video below and prepare to be moved.
