Angelina Jolie Makes First Public Statement Since Wedding — And It’s About Syria

by 3 mins ago

Even before Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were Mr. and Mrs. Smith Pitt, Jolie was single-mindedly dedicated to her role as a Goodwill Ambassador for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Maybe that’s why her first public statement after the world was surprised by the Brangelina wedding wasn’t about marital bliss, but about the escalating situation in Syra.

“Three million refugees is not just another statistic, it is a searing indictment of our collective failure to end the war in Syria.” Jolie said, in a statement on Friday (August 29).

Jolie, who is now a special envoy for the UNHCR, is referring to the conflict in Syria and Iraq between the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) and the US. ISIS is attempting to set up their own Sunni Islamic state and have already gained control of huge tracts of land in Syria and Iraq. The hostile takeovers and resulting violence have led to the huge number of refugees that Jolie is referring to.

“International stability is steadily bleeding away in Syria,” Jolie continued on. “UN Security Council Resolutions are being ignored; war crimes are being committed on a daily basis; regional countries are staggering under the human burden; and Syrian refugees are dying in the Mediterranean sea, trying to reach Europe.”

by 31 mins ago

Reese Witherspoon has donned her Elle Wood pink duds once again—and this time it’s for a cause. Not that getting into Harvard to win back her ex-boyfriend wasn’t important, but Reese posted this throwback “Pink Lady” video and Instagram on Wednesday (August 27) in a show support for a four-year-old named Will who is currently battling cancer.

Will’s mother Julie emailed Reese to let her know that one of her best-known roles in 2001′s “Legally Blonde” had helped cheer her son up while he was in the hospital. After hearing this, the actress simply had to send a personal message to her young fan.

Sending love from both Elle and her adorable puppy sidekick Bruiser, Reese is in head-to-toe pink and all smiles to help support one of her biggest fans during his tough battle.

“#TeamWill This is for one of the strongest little four-year-olds I can imagine,” she wrote in the caption of her Instagram post. “Will – I hear that you’re fighting so hard and strong against cancer and that in the hospital you’ve been watching a lot of Legally Blonde and loving it.”

This Upbeat Sam Smith Remix Will Have You Dancing Through The Tears

by 11 mins ago

It’s no secret around here that we’ve got a soft spot for Sam Smith. The British crooner is one of our 2014 Artists To Watch, and did you see that VMA performance of “Stay With Me”? Let me include it below in case you missed it.

As Sam continues to conquer the world with his heart-rending ballads, one of our favorites, “I’m Not The Only One,” got an upbeat, garage remix from British DJ and producer Grant Nelson. The heartbreak and cheating is all still there, but it’s pumped up with a thumping beat and an array of airy vocals and plenty of jumpy synths.

Along with pretty much everyone who has come in contact with Sam’s mesmerizing voice, we loved the original version with its sparse, lonely piano. But this remix raises the stakes of the track and imbues the song with a little more ferocity.

This might be the version to turn to when you’ve started to get over the betrayal, and you’re ready to hit the dance floor. Thanks Grant, we owe you one. And Sam, thank you for blessing us with that soulful, perfect voice—along with your endless humility and adorable smile.

Chance The Rapper And Common Tell Chicago Tales On Lil Herb’s ‘Fight Or Flight’ Remix

by 4 mins ago

“Never quit, never give in.”

It’s a message anyone can relate to, and it is thread as the chorus to Lil Herb’s soulful “Fight or Flight,” which was remixed by Common and Chance the Rapper on Friday (August 29).

The new track, which follows up the original from Herb’s February release, Welcome to Fazoland, merges the three styles together smoothly on the Brian Miller-produced cut.

There’s G Herbo’s gruff, hardened vocals to open and close the song, with Common’s poetic, seasoned verse and Chance’s vibrant delivery in between. The three tell stories of their younger years and the things they’ve seen, each coming with a unique tale.

Lil Herb was also featured on the cover art and the opening track on Common’s Nobody’s Smiling album, which dropped in July.

Quiz: Which 2014 Movie Is Your Summer Boyfriend?

by 8 mins ago

Summer is a time for fun, sun, and short-term relationships. We don’t necessarily mean with people — remember that one summer you were obsessed with floral parachute pants, only to shelve them come fall and never wear them again? Or the time you spent Memorial Day to Labor Day only drinking a smooth mixture of watermelon juice and fountain Coke?

It happened, and it was great while it was happening, but it’s not a forever thing.

We here at MTV News believe that movies can be the same way. Who says you can’t have a summer fling with a summer flick? Take our quiz below and find out which of this season’s releases is your summer boyfriend.

Game Decided On A Release Date For The Documentary 2

by 17 mins ago

He’s actually gonna make this happen.

Earlier this month, when MTV News caught up with Game on the set of his “Or Nah” video, he told us there was a chance that The Documentary 2 wouldn’t actually drop in January 2015, like he originally planned — but it looks like things will work out after all.

Since Game is prepping Year of the Wolf, plus that project with Ed Sheeran, he seemed doubtful that his sequel would arrive on time, but a 10-year anniversary only comes around once. He took to Instagram on Thursday night to announce that January 18 is the release date.

“#YearOfTheWolf is finally done,” he wrote of his new Blood Money album, due out in October. “Now on to ‘The Documentary 2′ dropping January 18th…. Exactly 10 years from ‘The Documentary’….. Nobody is f—–g with 2 !!!!!!!!! So don’t drop nowhere near me….. You’ve been warned!”

Sounds like a great anniversary gift.

6 Vintage Lorde Quotes That Foreshadowed Her Success

by 19 mins ago

So, Lorde has basically won all of the awards now — most recently snapping up the VMA for Best Rock Video. In honor of this Flashback Friday — and in the wake of her win — we’d like to take a look back to late 2013, when we at MTV did our first interviews with the now-massive pop star.

There were inklings even then that she would find herself in the firmament — as evidenced by this passel of quotes.

From our first-ever interview with Lorde — in which we declared her “cooler than you” — to casual chats about her now-iconic hair, it was apparent that Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor’s wry humor and rare talent would take her far.

Here are some standout moments from our vintage (read: from last year) footage of the “Tennis Court” singer:

1.) “It just seems crazy that you wouldn’t care about what your music videos look like. Anything that’s coming from you — doesn’t matter if it’s not music, it’s content that you’re putting a name to. In this day and age you can’t afford to be lazy with that kind of stuff.”

2.) “I don’t close the set with ‘Royals.’”

3.) “Pop music doesn’t have to be stupid and alternative music doesn’t have to be boring — you can mix the two together and make something cool that people will like. People have a brain.”

4.) “I have pretty strong morals and opinions being ...

Sia Wrote Maroon 5 And Gwen Stefani One Intense Song: Listen

by 25 mins ago

The deluxe, 14-track version of Maroon 5′s fifth studio album, V, is streaming right now on iTunes Radio, which means that fans of the band are finally able to listen to frontman Adam Levine’s much buzzed-about collaboration with his fellow “Voice” judge, Gwen Stefani.

The understated piano ballad was co-penned by Sia — and it shows. The sweeping sonic landscapes and the raw, elongated vowel dips have her signature all over them. Levine, Benny Blanco, Darkchild and Andre Lindal all played a hand in the song’s creation, too, just in case you need more reasons to check it out.

Other standouts on the LP include lead single “Maps”, “It Was Always You,” with verses that build to near George Michael “Freedom ’90″ levels, and a cover of Marcy Playground’s “Sex And Candy.” There’s also “Sugar,” a slinky bit of Bee Gees electronica — not unlike past hit “Makes Me Wonder” — that makes for a pretty effective comedown from the plethora of ’70s-throwback we’ve been given this past year.

Liam Neeson Would Play Ra’s al Ghul On ‘Arrow’ ‘In A Heartbeat’

by 25 mins ago

With reporting by Charles Webb

After teasing the DC Comics’ baddie’s appearance for nearly two seasons, The CW’s “Arrow” will finally introduce “Batman Begins” villain Ra’s al Ghul in season three. But other than a brief tease as to his revamped look in an extended teaser, we don’t know much about who will be playing him, even as the season premiere on October 8 rapidly approaches.

So how about Liam Neeson, who played Ra’s in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy?

You wouldn’t think the actor would be up for transferring his take to television, but as MTV News found out when we sat down with the actor at the junket for his new movie “A Walk Among The Tombstones,” that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

“No, I haven’t, I haven’t at all,” Neeson said when asked if either Warner Bros. or The CW had approached him about the role on “Arrow.”

Which isn’t that surprising, as the Nolan movies (and “Man of Steel”) have so far been kept very much separate from the TV universe created in “Arrow” and the upcoming ‘The Flash.” But would Neeson reprise the role if asked?

“I would, in a heartbeat, if it came my way, yeah,” Neeson continued. “Very much so.”

Which certainly sends any superhero fans’ mind racing, but before we get too excited, chances are “Arrow” will snag someone new for their take, rather than creating a direct connection with Nolan’s movies. If that did happen, we followed up by asking whether Neeson had any advice ...
