Could Miranda July’s New App Earn You A Hug From Lorde?

by 1 min ago

Do you want Lena Dunham to ask your girlfriend to marry you? How about a hug from your boyfriend via Lorde? Well, that might all be possible (although probably not) thanks to a new app from Miranda July that both stars have supported.

Thursday, Dunham tweeted about Somebody, an app released this week by the director. “Today was a joy: watched genius @Miranda_July’s film about her app about human contact. Go to http://somebodyapp.com and join the revolution,” she said, a sentiment Lorde reiterated with a retweet.

So what is this thing and why are Lorde and Co. so excited? Well, it’s a new kind of messaging app. Basically, after users sign up for an account — creating a detailed profile with a photo — they can send a message to a friend and have that message delivered via a nearby stranger. In person.

What would that look like? Let me break it down. (Or you could just watch the short film below.)

If I want to ask my (hypothetical) boyfriend Johnny to go see “If I Stay” with me tonight in Williamsburg and cry and cry and cry, I can compose that message to Johnny and choose someone in the vicinity of the motorcycle/hair gel shop where he works to deliver it. In my message, I can also include directives for the person who chooses to convey my invitation, such as “cry,” “fist bump” or “kiss.” Although I probably wouldn’t want anyone smooching my non-existant boyfriend — so scratch ...

Miley Cyrus’ Support Of Her Homeless VMA Date Will Help Raise Awareness, LA Shelter Hopes

by 13 mins ago

After Miley Cyrus brought 22-year-old homeless man Jesse Helt to the 2014 VMAs — and had him accept her Video of the Year award and speak on stage about homelessness in L.A. — the aspiring model was thrust into the public eye in a big way.

His newfound celebrity earned him the attention of the cops in his native Oregon, where he had a warrant out for his arrest, and, subsequently, imprisonment after he turned himself into the cops late Thursday. Still, My Friend’s Place — the organization through which Cyrus met Helt and now supports — is hopeful that Cyrus’ support of both Jesse and the cause will help draw attention to the plight of young homeless people across the U.S. and will lead to a positive outcome.

“All we want for these young people is to find the opportunities to step into resolving issues — to be able to take accountability and move forward with their lives,” Heather Carmichael, executive director of My Friend’s Place, told MTV News. “That is scary for everybody, to hold ourselves responsible for the mistakes we’ve made. To be able now to have the resources to maybe take this on and resolve it in partnership with whatever adult steps in, as scary as that might be for [Jesse]… I hope this an opportunity to change the stage he gets to stand on in his own life.”

“If he now has a friend in Miley that’s going to help ...

Rihanna’s Slip And Sneaker Game Is On Point

by 15 mins ago

When you keep a watchful eye on basically everything Rihanna does—it’s not creepy, OK? It’s my job—you begin to notice trends in her wardrobe. Her devotion to silky loungewear this summer has been apparent—the trend kicked off at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards when she wore a straight-up robe on the red carpet—but recently, she’s added a new element into the mix: sneakers.

RihannaSplash News

In early July, Rih wore a pink, lace-trimmed slip with black Converse. The overall look was very bedroom chic, though, I suppose, most people don’t wear sneakers once they reach the confines of their own bedrooms.

RihannaSplash News

Days later, Rih wore another slip—this time white—with high-top Converse. Paired with her septum piercing and iridescent bucket hat, this ~lewk~ is decidedly less bedroom appropriate.

RihannaSplash News

Perhaps the most dress-like and least slip-like in the collection, Rih paired this Helmut Lang fuchsia number with a pair of monochrome New Balances. Unlike with her other two slips, Rihanna actually carried a bag with her—a black and white striped Balmain clutch, to be exact. Where she kept her money/phone/lip gloss while wearing those other outfits remains a mystery, TBH.

RihannaSplash News

And finally, Rih returned to a very shiny slip, but paired it with some very fancy sneakers. Like, Lanvin-level fancy. Once again, I may note, without a bag. Where do you keep your things, Rih?! Secrets of the rich and famous, I guess.

The Kid Who Live-Tweeted Michael Brown’s Shooting Wrote A Rap About It

by 19 mins ago

Of all of the firsthand accounts to come out of Ferguson, Missouri in the aftermath of the killing of Michael Brown, one of the most jarring came from the Twitter account a user named @TheePharoah. He witnessed and subsequently live-tweeted the shooting and its aftermath from his own home, providing on-the-scene coverage of the story in real-time.

Though he had no way of knowing it in the moment, posts from the user, whose real name is Emanuel Freeman, spread rapidly on social media and via news outlets in the subsequent days.

Vice tracked down and spoke with the 19-year-old — who’s also a budding rapper — who not only recounted his experience, but wrote a song about it.

“The song is basically just to explain my viewpoint,” he said. “Song is my best form of communication, so I figured I’d write this song.”

“They throwin’ tear gas, I’m hearin’ gunshots, I duck ‘em all/ Mom cryin’, dad worried, they don’t want they son involved,” he raps passionately on the song, which begins at the 3-minute mark in the video above, and is delivered a capella.

The interview portion of the clip, which comes before the rap, is similarly heartbreaking and illuminating.

“I thought I had just witnessed something that changed my life, but it changed America,” he said in an interview. “I had to explain my case to the FBI; I had to get a lawyer.”

“I haven’t talked to Mike’s family. I actually don’t know how that would go. I don’t ...

Ariana Grande Compliments ‘Today’ Host’s Butt: ‘Dat Booty Doe’

by 1 min ago

Not only did Ariana Grande help Al Roker do the weather this morning — and sing four songs outside Rockefeller Center — but she had a chance to comment on “Today” show host Tamron Hall’s butt. Sure, she was demure when Matt Lauer asked her about her love life, but when it came time to watch a clip of Tamron’s appearance in “Running Wild With Bear Grylls,” she went all in.

When the clip ended, Ariana just had to chime in: “Dat booty doe.” While Tamron was embarrassed, Al claimed, “She just said what we were all thinking.” Oof.

And here’s the shorter version just so you can hear Ariana say it over and over.

by 23 mins ago

Ma$e is prepping his latest album Now We Even, and while his recent releases have been more club and radio friendly, he’s taking a break from the jams for some real talk on “Politically Incorrect.”

Following the huge posse cut on “Don’t Shoot,” the Harlem rapper adds his own two cents to the uproar over the shooting deaths of Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin.

“Rainy night down in Florida, dispatcher said don’t follow him/ How the hell he end up with the coroners? I don’t get it,” Ma$e spits on the track. “I’m politically incorrect, I’ll never sell my own out for a check/ They say that I’m from generation X/ ADD, n—-s don’t know what I’m gon’ do next.”

“It got me wondering, is Obama gon’ protect his own?” he adds. “Yeah, yeah, yeah, I hear all the talk/ But I’m also watching Zimmerman and Wilson walk.”

The 103 Greatest Lines From ‘Ghostbusters’

by 27 mins ago

If you’re unafraid of ghosts, and into awesome movies, then the box-office has a big treat for you this weekend: “Ghostbusters” is back in theaters, in honor of its 30th anniversary.

Since its debut in 1984, the words of Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore have rung throughout the ears and years of pop culture. Here are the most quotable lines in “Ghostbusters” — which, incidentally, is basically the whole movie.

1. Ray Stantz: “Drop everything, Venkman. We got one.”

2. Peter Venkman: “Egon, somehow this reminds me of the time you tried to drill a hole in your head. Do you remember that?”

3. Peter Venkman: “Have you or any member of your family ever been diagnosed schizophrenic or mentally incompetent?”

4. Librarian: “Well, my uncle thought he was St. Jerome…”

5. Peter Venkman: “I’ll call that a big yes.”

6. Peter Venkman: “Spengler, are you serious about actually catching a ghost?”

7. Egon Spengler: “I’m always serious.”

8. The Ghostbusters: “We’re ready to believe you!”

9. Janine Melnitz: “You’re very handy, I can tell. I bet you like to read a lot, too. I read a lot myself. Some people think I’m too intellectual but I think it’s a fabulous way to spend your spare time. I also play racquetball. Do you have any hobbies?”

10. Egon Spengler: “I collect spores, molds, and fungus.”

11. Dana Barrett: “You don’t act like a scientist. You’re more like a gameshow host.”

12. Peter Venkman: “I’m gonna go ...
