These Flashback Emmy Pics Prove That 2004 Was Truly The Best Year

by 6 mins ago

The 2004, 56th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards came during a very strange time in the pop culture world. “Lost” was still three days away from changing the television landscape forever, “Arrested Development” came out of nowhere to upset all of the awards show comedy favorites — AKA their “Modern Familys” — and Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were still a thing. (I know. I know.)

So to honor the weird and wonderful world of yesteryear, let’s take a step back and stroll down memory lane — here are, without a doubt, the most nostalgia-inducing pics from the 2004 Emmy Awards.

Grimes Won’t Do The Ice Bucket Challenge Because Of Animal Testing

by 1 min ago

See? Not everybody’s participating in the ALS ice bucket challenge — and singer Grimes has particularly good reason for it.

After being nominated by DJ Richie Hawtin, Skrillex, and Dubfire to dump a bucket o’ the cold stuff atop her head, Grimes took to Tumblr to voice her reservations about ALS as an organization, particularly in regards to their animal testing.

“Haha okay, richie is probably the nicest and coolest person I’ve ever met so i can’t really refuse him,” she wrote. “[H]owever, I would like to say that I don’t feel great about wasting water in this california drought, but i will donate money.”

But it didn’t stop there. Grimes went on to call out ALS in regards to their animal testing — something actress Pamela Anderson also recently did on her Facebook page. But in a statement from ALS received by The Daily Banter, the organization insisted that their practices involving animals are safe and ethical.

“Significant advances have been made in ALS and other neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease using model systems such as rodents, flies and worms to better understand disease mechanisms and to develop therapies. … The ALS Association supports laboratories and scientists that strictly adhere to the guidelines provided by the National Institutes of Health.”

Instead of donating to ALS, Grimes opted to give to another organization, The Malala Fund. “I will not donate money to this foundation because of their record of testing ...

Lil Wayne, Chance the Rapper Send Congrats to Little League Champions

by 6 mins ago

By Britt Julious

It’s high time for baseball season and the U.S. Little League Championship game was where it was at yesterday … just ask Chance the Rapper! The Acid Rap rising star tweeted about a visit to a Chicago community center with his father to watch Jackie Robinson West, an all-black team from Chicago’s South Side, take the championship title on a televised game.

The outpouring of support was little surprise for those following the team’s bulldozing journey. Yesterday’s win was not just any game — it was the first time a Chicago team has reached the championship game since 1967 and the first time Jackie Robinson West reached the playoffs since its inception 31 years ago.

“Just know we turnin up for y’all,” the rapper tweeted soon after at a block party, also celebrating the team’s win.

And Chance was not the only music star celebrating the momentous win. Former Chicagoans Flosstradamus , Young Jeezy, and even Lil Wayne threw in their support.

“Couldn’t be more proud of the Chicago little league team!” Wayne tweeted early this morning. “Ya represented ya city well, now represent for the country!” The team will play for the Little League World Series against Seoul, South Korea today at 3 PM EST and the game will air on ABC stations across the country.

Backstreet Boys Tweet ’90s-tastic Throwback VMAs Photo

by 33 mins ago

How ’90s is the VMA throwback photo that the Backstreet Boys just posted to Twitter? Let’s count the ways.

1. The “Matrix”-inspired black trench coats and shades. I’m thinking it’s not a coincidence that the movie came out a few months earlier.

2. The one (at least) confirmed case of frosted tips. (Lookin’ at you, A.J.)

3. The matching combat boots.

4. Nick Carter. All of Nick Carter.

The ‘Harry Potter’ Movies Were Way Scarier Than You Remember

by 16 mins ago

By the end of the series, the “Harry Potter” movies got pretty dark, and even though they’re based on children’s book, none of the films were short on scares — some of which went by too quickly to notice.

To that point, redditor Such_A_Jerxes noticed how scary the tightly edited apparition sequences in the later “Harry Potter” movies were and pulled some screen shots.

I’ve embedded a few below, but be sure to check out the full Imgur gallery to know the true horror of apparating.

Michael Brown Sr. Asks For No Protests, ‘Moment Of Silence’ During Son’s Funeral

by 36 mins ago

By Britt Julious

After more than two weeks of protests in Feguson, Missouri, Michael Brown’s father has asked people to call off all protests on the day of his son’s funeral.

During an interview on Hot 104.1 FM, a St. Louis-based hip hop station, Michael Brown Sr. said, “I would like for no protesting going on. We just want a moment of silence that whole day. Just out of respect for our son.”

The Ferguson saga has gripped many inside and outside of the community. Celebrities too have voiced their concern and support for the protestors in the increasingly tense aftermath of the August 9 shooting of the unarmed teen. J. Cole and Keke Palmer made trips to the suburban St. Louis town to get a better understanding of the ongoing struggles. Lauryn Hill released “Black Rage,” a protest song, in response to the ongoing violence and rates of police brutality toward African Americans. Most recently, Cat Power announced a free benefit concert in support of the Feguson protesters.

Brown’s funeral will be held on Monday, August 25 at 10 a.m. in a St. Louis church. Expected attendees include the Reverend Al Sharpton and three White House officials.

‘Sons Of Anarchy’: Here’s How Many People Will Die This Season

by 40 mins ago

It’s just over two weeks until the final season of “Sons of Anarchy” premieres, and we just can’t stop revving our engines. Now, we here at MTV News have already seen — and shared a few observations from — the season seven premiere, and we know when it will end (December 2, keep on it), but now we actually know how many characters will meet their ends.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, show creator Kurt Sutter shared how many people he’s planning on killing off on the ultra-violent show this season.

“Two club members will be dead,” Sutter said. “I don’t think there will be more than that.”

Oh, that seems…surprisingly low!

In the season premiere, Jax (Charlie Hunnam) tells his motorcycle riding bros that he expects them to lay their lives on the line (even if Sutton doesn’t plan on making that necessary).

“For me to move forward with all the things we now have to do, I need to know this table has no doubts, no mistrust, that every single one of you would kill or die for the man next to him,” Jax says.

Maybe if there’s less dying, it means more killing? We’ll just have to see.

“Sons of Anarchy” returns on FX September 9.

Winter Comes For George R.R. Martin During Ice Bucket Challenge

by 4 mins ago

George R.R. Martin has made his living putting beloved characters through all sorts of painful experiences, but how does the “Game of Thrones” author stand up to a little cold? Not too well, apparently.

Martin took the Ice Bucket Challenge after three people, including fellow author Neil Gaiman, nominated him to help fight ALS — which everyone can do over at ALSA.org.

The creator of all of Westeros was smart enough to take on the Ice Bucket Challenge next to a pool, but his wails suggest he wouldn’t do too well in his own fictional world. “Winter came!” he screamed.

What Was Drake Thinking During ‘Anaconda’? We Have The Answer

by 5 mins ago

Drake got a very special, up-close-and-personal view of Nicki Minaj‘s video for “Anaconda,” so of course everyone was wondering what the hell could be going through his mind during that scene.

Now we don’t have to imagine.

A video just popped up over on Facebook that brings us inside the head of Drake during the filming of “Anaconda” with the help of Spongebob Squarepants, Phoenix Wright and Sarah McLachlan.

‘Doctor Who’: 6 Burning Questions For ‘Deep Breath’

by 11 mins ago

Who knew a “Doctor Who” series premiere could be so satisfying, and yet raise so many gigantic questions? Yet that’s exactly what “Deep Breath” did, making us wonder whether this will be the least done-in-one season of “Who” ever.

Here’s every burning question we’ve got, including the one already mentioned above!

1. Did The Doctor Kill That Dude?

DW-12_Ep1_00312©BBC/BBC Worldwide 2014

It’s a question we expect may never get answered, but will color nearly every interaction The Doctor has this season: did he kill the cyborg, or did the cyborg leap to his death? Is this, unlike every previous incarnation, a Doctor who will truly murder a living being one on one?

It’s been a question raised time and again, whether The Doctor leading beings or civilizations down the road to destroying themselves is tantamount to killing them. Is it any different if he just straight up murders a dude? For our money, yes, and we’re hoping The Doctor hasn’t resorted to killing. But we shall have to wait and see.

2. Who Is Missy?

Michelle Gomez - Doctor WhoBBC AMERICA

Played by Michelle Gomez, the Big Bad of the season welcomes the repaired cyborg to paradise. But where is paradise, exactly? Who is Missy? And why does she think The Doctor is her boyfriend?

Gomez was already confirmed to be playing a character called “The Gatekeeper of The Nethersphere,” and we know she’ll show up later on in an episode involving Cybermen. But other than that… Nothing. ...
