Jason Statham And Jimmy Fallon Face Off In The Ultimate Hamster Ball Race

by 3 mins ago

Jimmy Fallon had to know the odds were stacked against him when he challenged action star Jason Statham to a Hamster Ball Race. On Friday’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” the pair both put on their game faces, but only one would emerge the winner.

Yes, that’s right, two grown men racing each other in a simulated “hamster ball” style by running inside of two clear, blow-up balls like little hamsters do to keep themselves occupied.

Statham, who stopped by the show to promote “The Expendables 3,” was practically born to win races, just consider see his butt-kicking roles in “Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels, “The Italian Job” and “Crank,” among others.

He unsurprisingly owned “The Tonight Show” host, easily clearing the designated dancing panda bear halfway marker, but not before doing the equivalent of a hamster ball “fist bump” as he circled to the finish line in Rockefeller Plaza.

There was no bad blood after the contest, though: the out-of-breath Fallon pointed to Statham, saying, “The champ, the best guy, Jason Statham right there. You killed it, buddy!” Indeed. We’d like to see Statham against a real, live hamster next!

Watch Miley Cyrus Freak Out Over A Bee In This Flashback VMA Clip

by 58 mins ago

Miley Cyrus is completely fearless and up for anything these days. From getting tatted up, acquiring questionable pets, and letting a fan grope her during a meet and greet.. and that’s all been just in the past month.

But before Miley was the platinum blonde with the pixie who twerked on Robin Thicke in a nude plastic onesie, she was still the Miley from “Hannah Montana,” who was just breaking into the heavy-hitting music biz. Notably, she had very long brown locks. So it’s hard to even think that this prepubescent Miley is in any way related to the Miley of late, or that she would be scared by anything. Let alone a little bumbly bee. (She did just go glamping in the woods, with bugs and stuff).

Enjoy this precious gem of a moment where during the 2008 VMA Pre-Show, Miley’s fans warned her—out of love we’re sure—that she had a bee on her. Then watch the freakout commence. Miley loses it, screaming and running as much as she can in the enclosed interview space, clutching the mic cube in terror.

Katy Perry and Taylor Swift were by her side as all three girls were up for the Best New Artist category that year, and react about how you’d expect them to.

You’ll notice that Katy Perry has a chain reaction from Miley’s screams, while Taylor stays cool, calm and collected and lets the other two flit about in panic, saying “breathe, just breathe.”

The ‘Downton Abbey’ Cast Has Addressed Water Bottle-Gate In An Awesome Way

by 32 mins ago

The cast of “Downton Abbey” is coming clean. After an accidental water bottle was featured on the mantle behind press portraits of The Earl and Lady Edith, the internet—this News source included—was up in arms over the obvious oopsie. We may not be historians, but we do know that no waters may they be Fiji, Smart, or any other liquid beverage would be bottled in plastic in 1920′s England. (Thank you endless lecturer in HIST 112.)

The Brits had a jovial sense of humor about the whole bit, posting a picture of the “Downton Abbey” cast on their Facebook page embracing “water bottle-gate,” admitting the un-cropped version of the image that featured the water bottle “sparked a global press frenzy” once found by the Internet. The cast is using the media attention to promote the work of international charity WaterAid, which aims to provide clean water and toilets to poor communities.

Downtown Abbey Facebook

Barbara Frost, Chief Executive of WaterAid, said “It brought a really big smile to my face when the cast of Downton Abbey said that they wanted to support WaterAid’s work. How fantastic that the attention created over one water bottle ends up benefiting some of the world’s poorest communities through access to safe, clean water today. Every pound and penny WaterAid receives will be matched by the UK Government, which means we can reach twice as many people with desperately needed clean water and sanitation.”

The Skateboarding Community Mourns The Loss Of Original ‘Z Boy’ Jay Adams

by 9 mins ago

Yesterday (August 15), Jay Adams, a pop culture icon and one of the founding members of the skateboarding collective the “Z Boys,” died at the age of 53. Adams was on a surf vacation in Puerto Escondido, Mexico when he died. According to the Los Angeles Times, the preliminary diagnosis for his death is a heart attack.

As a member of the Zephyr Skateboarding team or “Z Boys” that helped shape skateboarding as a sport and a cultural force back in the ’70s, Adams really rose to prominence in 2001 when the documentary film “Dogtown and Z Boys” was released. The film’s plot surrounded Adams and his friends Stacy Peralta and Tony Alva skating in the Santa Monica neighborhood of Dogtown.

Adams was especially known for the way his surfing style influenced his skateboarding, and for a certain fluidity that most skaters couldn’t achieve. He had nicknames like “pure seed” and even “the chosen one” but mostly shied away from big, corporate skating competitions.

The story of “Dogtown and Z Boys” was turned into a fictional account in 2005 called “Lords of Dogtown,” and actor Emile Hirsch played Adams in the movie. Yesterday Hirsch took to Twitter to express his sense of grief.

Others also keenly felt the loss of Adams, like professional skater Tony Hawk, who cites Adams as an inspiration.

Photographer Glen E. Friedman who helped promote the work of Jay and other counter-culture figures also tweeted his grief.

And shared his own tribute to Jay:

Another photographer, Mike Andrick, shared another ...

WNBA Star Brittney Griner Proposed To Her Girlfriend Last Night

by 52 mins ago

Brittney Griner is engaged to the woman of her dreams! The WNBA superstar proposed to girlfriend and fellow WNBA member Glory Johnson, and captured the moment for the rest of us in a series of adorable Instagram post.

The primary concern, of course, was the proposal. She captioned this picture: “Last Night was a Night to Remember. I became the happiest person on this earth! (almost pass out but when that one word came out I came back to life) Me and my baby @missvol25 are in it for Life!”

Johnson returned the favor, posting a morning after pic with her new fiancé. “What I get to wake up to . #LoveMakesYouDoTheCraziestThings”

The 6’8″ Griner was selected as the Number 1 pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury, the team she still plays for. Griner officially came out in April, 2013, telling Sports Illustrated “If I can show that I’m out and I’m fine and everything’s OK, then hopefully the younger generation will definitely feel the same way.”

The annoucement was a landmark for gay athletes from both genders, as Griner was later followed by NBA player Jason Collins and NFL player Michael Sam, who both publicly came out.

Congratulations Brittney and Glory! We couldn’t be happier for this beautiful couple.

Will There Be A Sequel To ‘The Giver’? Brenton Thwaites And Lois Lowry Weigh In

by 17 mins ago

Fans are already squealing with dystopian delight over “The Giver,” which hit theaters this weekend with Brenton Thwaites, Odeya Rush, Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, and — of course — Taylor Swift at the helm. The film took about eighteen years to come together after Bridges struggled to keep hold of the rights, but now that it’s here, we’re sure the cast and crew are busy celebrating their success and picking out a fine bottle of champagne to toast with.

… Or are they?

Everybody knows that, especially in the young adult world, it’s all about having multiple sequels these days. And fans of the novel the film was based on also probably know that Lois Lowry wrote three more books — “Gathering Blue,” “Messenger,” and “Son” — that followed the 1993 original. So when MTV News hit up the film’s New York City premiere, we just had to ask — will a return to the Community happen sometime in the next, say, eighteen years?

“That’s like asking a woman in labor if she wants to have another baby next year,” Lowry said with a laugh. “She would say ‘no,’ and yet I am a woman who had four children in four years. So maybe down the road a little bit, not too far off, maybe I could get excited about it.”

Well, that sounds like good news! However, even if “The Giver” proves to be a hit and sequels are given the go-ahead, you won’t necessarily see the same cast. Each book ...

En Vogue’s VMA-Winning ‘Free Your Mind’ Is The 90s Throwback We Need After This Week

by 9 mins ago

1993 was just over 20 years ago. It was exactly one year after the race riots in Los Angeles that erupted after another case of brutal police mistreatment.

1993 was also the year that the R&B girl-group En Vogue took the VMAs by storm, scooping up three VMAs for their “Free Your Mind” video.

Their aggressive, liberal-minded video takes on racial and sexist prejudices with unapologetic strength. “Free your mind and the rest will follow / be colorblind, don’t be so shallow,” goes the chorus.

At this point we’re dealing with more than just shallow attitudes but then again, all of this violence and injustice begins with misguided thought processes.

Related: Michael Brown Shooting: A Timeline Of The Fallout In Ferguson

The video for “Free Your Mind” dealt with a lot of the same frustrations and tensions that we’ve seen played out this week in regards to Ferguson. Watching Maxine Jones, Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron and Terry Ellis of En Vogue walk the runaway with fierce determination and no apologies for what they wear or how they look, act or feel is a balm of its own.

That year, En Vogue were nominated for eight VMAs (and two Grammys!) and won the VMAs for Best R&B Dance Video, Best Dance Choreography and Best R&B video. Take a look below to see why.

Who will take home the VMA in those categories this year?
