30 ‘Doctor Who’ Episode That Will Make You A Whovian In No Time

by 49 mins ago

When it comes to “Doctor Who,” there’s, well, a LOT of area to cover. It’s a series that’s been on for 50 years now, making it a mind-boggling thing to attempt to get into. With all the hullabaloo and fanfare that ushers each new Doctor into the TARDIS, it can certainly be an intimidating sphere of entertainment.

But it doesn’t have to be!

Really. The world of “Doctor Who,” though vast and filled with superfans aplenty — knowledge of the universe and canonical things that make Who, well, Who — is, at its heart, a fun and sometimes campy series about an alien and a human, zipping through time and space tackling myriad alien problems throughout history, finding a bit of humanity even amongst the most un-human among us. It’s lovely and silly and funny and action-y and doesn’t have to be that serious if you don’t want it to be. After all, TV first and foremost, is about having fun.

So we’ve decided to create a list of some of the best episodes of the series — ones that will ease you into the madness if you’re curious for a toe-dip. They’re mostly New Who as opposed to the Classic Who of the 60s, 70s, and 80s but we’ve thrown a few bonus episodes of those in if you’re feeling particularly jazzed on Time Lords and ready to commit to becoming a full-fledged Whovian.

Ariana Grande Takes Us Behind The Scenes Of Her ‘Star Wars’-Inspired ‘Break Free’ Video

by 53 mins ago

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Ariana Grande shot the music video for “Break Free.” And after waiting very patiently, the “Break Free” video is here.

When MTV News caught up with the pop sensation earlier this summer, she promised an out-of-this-world adventure with the Queen of the Galaxy serving as her muse — and, boy, did she deliver.

“The inspiration for the ‘Break Free’ video is ‘Barbarella,’ ‘Star Wars’ and sort of like a retro take on space age, futuristic moments,” she revealed.

In the music video, Ariana stays true to her word with space-inspired scenes featuring her fighting alien robots, floating in zero gravity and shooting rockets from her bra top.

“I really wanted to do a take on what Barbarella wore for part of it,” she explained. “She did like 100 costume changes but my favorite outfit she wore was this beige sort of spacesuit that was very short and had these built in, like, hip pads type thing and I really wanted to do a take on that, so that’s where the inspiration for the outfit came from.”

This might be just a taste of what is to come at the 2014 Video Music Awards, where Ariana will perform the track live. “Break ...

Iggy Azalea And Rita Ora Channel ‘Kill Bill’ In ‘Black Widow’ Video: Watch Now

by 3 mins ago

If we learned one thing from watching Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora in the “Black Widow” video it’s that these two girls are badass.

The highly anticipated, cinematic video dropped on Wednesday (August 13) and not only pays homage to ’70s kung-fu flicks, but takes a page out of Quentin Tarantino’s hit movie “Kill Bill” — itself a tribute to kung-fu flicks of that era.

Rita and Iggy team up to play femme fatales seeking out revenge on the video’s other star, Michael Madsen, who just so happens to be a star of the “Kill Bill” action/thriller.

Directed by Director X, the video kicks off with Iggy playing a waitress at a diner and taking Michael’s order. Michael, who’s dining with Rita, seems to get on Iggy’s (or Fox as her nametag says) nerves. Iggy begins to dream up ways she and her blonde sidekick would work together to take him down.

From there on, it’s an all-out action sequence, as Iggy enters samurai training, while Rita wins a hand of poker against T.I. and “Goodfellas” actor Paul Sorvino, who make quick cameos.

The girls reunite at the end of the video, rocking one-piece leather suits, fighting off a group of men with their impressive sword skills and ultimately having the black widow spider take down Madsen.

Watch the video now and don’t forget to see the girls perform the song together live at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.

Nicky Hilton Engaged To Rothschild Banking Heir

by 18 mins ago

Nicky Hilton is reportedly set to walk down the aisle. The hotel heiress said yes to her boyfriend James Rothschild while vacationing in Italy, according to US Weekly.

“They went on a romantic anniversary trip over the weekend,” a source told the magazine. “He took her out on a boat into the middle of Lake Como and he proposed, got down on one knee and everything. It was incredibly romantic and beautiful.”

Nicky’s younger sister Paris confirmed the news, posting a picture of the happy couple on her Instagram, captioning the picture, “Congratulations @NickyHilton on your engagement! I’m so happy for you! You will be the most beautiful bride!

Hilton has yet to comment on her engagement, but has been updating her followers on Instagram of her European road trip, including multiple shots in Lake Como.

Nicky and James, who is an heir to a European banking family, started dating back in 2011 after meeting at a friends wedding.

“Last month, he actually flew from England (where he is based) to the States to ask her parents for her hand in marriage,” the source added.

According to her Instagram feed, Nicky and her (possible) husband-to-be are currently still abroad enjoying the sights of Rome. Congrats to the happy couple!

From Kim Kardashian To Rembrandt: A Brief History Of The Selfie

by 20 mins ago

A mingled groan and “hmmm” went up around the globe this past weekend when we heard that snap queen Kim Kardashian plans to release a 352-photo book of selfies titled, appropriately, “Selfish.”

Given the title of the book — and its subject matter — you might assume that the tome is just one more sign of society’s impending, head-first plunge into Narcissus’ pool. And you might be right, in some respects — depending on how the book is packaged. Will it be a kind of Warhol-inspired look at fame through a celebrity’s own gaze? Or will it (more likely) be just a bunch of photos of Kim looking pretty? Only time — and a bunch of publicists — will tell.

The mere existence of the book, though, is just the latest chapter in the lifespan of the selfie, one that stretches back to the pre-phone, pre-camera days. It even goes further back than the MySpace shot, you guys — it’s that old.

Allow us to dive deep …

Selfies Have Been Around For Longer Than You Think

rem

If you think the first selfie was taken by some teen in his/her bedroom, cheesing with a Polaroid camera, you’re way off-base. The first “selfies” weren’t even captured on film.

“It really begins in the 1600s when Rembrandt famously paints a self-portrait,” Ben Agger, Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center for Theory at the University of Texas at Arlington, told MTV News.

Many artists have since put ...

Every Sci-Fi Movie Reference In Ariana Grande’s ‘Break Free’ Video

by 21 mins ago

The video for Ariana Grande‘s single “Break Free” is one big tribute to sci-fi flicks from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, packed with references.

If some of “Break Free” looked familiar, there’s a good reason. Here’s a rundown of the nods it makes to classic science fiction.

All right, we start off with an easy one.

ag-credits

It almost, kinda looks like the “Star Wars” opening scroll.

Star-Wars-opening

Then we see Ariana walking down a white, light-filled hallway.

ag-hallway

That’s from “2001: A Space Odyssey,” but you knew that already.

A lot of this video riffs on Jane Fonda’s look from “Barbarella.”

ag-outfit

See?

And this shot…

… is directly lifted from “Barbarella.”

barbarella-gravity

While “Planet of the Apes” isn’t the only sci-fi film to put humans in cages, I think that’s what they’re going for here.

ag-cages

I think this is an “Austin Power” reference, for some reason.

ag-fembot

Then there’s this guy.

ag-fu-manchu

This guy owes his style to the tradition of the stereotypical Asian villain, an example of which can be seen in “Flash Gordon.” We don’t see it that much anymore.

Ariana gets ready for her big night with lightsaber lipstick, which probably hurts a buttload.

But then she beams up to the deck “Star Trek”-style, which feels very wrong.

Before I can complain too much, Zedd punches it into “Star Wars”-style hyperspace. Is ...

This 9-Year-Old’s Cover Of ‘This Is Hardcore’ Is Awesome/Uncomfortable

by 30 mins ago

If you’ve ever had the pleasure (and I do mean pleasure) of seeing Pulp live, you’ll know that Jarvis Cocker’s hips are, like, insane. Now imagine those moves as executed by a 9-year-old — and feel simultaneously awed and uncomfortable.

Graham Johnson was the winner of a Pulp karaoke contest, judged by Cocker himself. The tiny dancer performed the band’s racy-as-the-title-suggests 1998 classic, “This Is Hardcore” (sample lyric: “It seems I saw you in some teenage wet dream”). Someone’s parents are cool.

You can watch the whole (pretty inspired) performance below. We’re not exactly sure how to feel about the whole thing, so we’ll leave you with these words from Jarvis himself: “What exactly do you do for an encore? ‘Cause this is hardcore.”

Nicki Minaj’s Style Has Totally Changed Since Her First VMAs

by 5 mins ago

The list of performers at the 2014 Video Music Awards just keeps getting better, eh? Nicki Minaj was just announced as a performer for the show on August 25 and we, of course, immediately thought about her new, low-key approach to fashion and how it stands in stark contrast to her past VMA looks. In the past, Nicki has gone BIG at the VMAs, which means whatever she wears this year will likely be a huge departure from her first appearance in 2010. Let’s kick this thang off.

2010

Nicki Minaj, VMAsGetty Images

At her first VMAs in 2010, Nicki performed at the pre-show in a very colorful outfit. Two-tone metallic for a first time performer? Yeah, no biggie. Also, that bun. The greatest bun in VMA history? I think so.

Nicki Minaj, VMAsGetty Images

For the red carpet, Nicki wore a fairly understated outfit—she kept the pink wig, but let the bun down. She paired her peach jumpsuit with a necklace that filled the entire area from right below her chin to her chest. It must weigh, like, 15 pounds. It is nothing, though, compared to the one she wore the following year.

2011

Nicki Minaj, VMAsGetty Images

See? You didn’t forget this ~lewk~, did you? We certainly didn’t. The following year, Nicki swapped her solid pink wig for one that included yellow, blonde, and pink. Why have one color when you can have three? It’s ...

Dylan O’Brien Gets Dirty For ‘Teen Vogue’

by 15 mins ago

Obviously, we here at MTV are huge Dylan O’Brien fans. If you’ve seen one second of Teen Wolf and are not a heartless monster, chances are you also are into DOB. Contributing to our love of this guy? These just-released Teen Vogue photos. Wow, you guys. WOW x 586746363. An old gas station has never looked so good.

Dylan O'BrienTeen Vogue

While the fashion in the shoot is relatively low-key—hi, white t-shirt—Dylan really nails the whole very-attractive-yet-greasy mechanic vibe. He didn’t get dirty from fixing cars, though.

Dylan O'BrienTeen Vogue

It was makeup! In this behind-the-scenes photo from the shoot, a makeup artist applies dirt to his QT face. Good thing they put a napkin around his neck, right? You wouldn’t want that shirt to accidentally get dirty. Oh, wait—I’m confused. Maybe he was eating lobster right before this shot?

Dylan O'BrienTeen Vogue

In another shot, Dylan cleans up (like, 80% clean) and lounges/smolders among old car parts. Petition to see Stiles in a shearling-lined denim jacket? All in favor say aye. Thank you, the matter is settled.

You can read the accompanying article and peep more photos on Teen Vogue‘s website.
