Toothless Ryan Gosling Is Haunting Lollapalooza And It’s Terrifying

by 25 mins ago

Chicago, IL — Anybody can hook a teddy bear to a giant pole and hoist it up in the air so their friends can find them at a big festival. But now that flower crowns are played out and some of us have finally gotten the message that Native American headdresses are not a cool accessory, the only thing left, apparently, is to make a giant find me posters of your favorite actor/musician/exchange student and parade around the grounds of Lollapalooza.

We’ve seen this at other festivals, but for the celebrity contingent in Chicago this weekend is so strong… and so weird.

American Idol Alum Michael Johns Tragically Dies At 35

by 19 mins ago

By Sasha Geffen

Michael Johns, the Australian singer who was a finalist on season 7 of American Idol, died yesterday (August 1). The Hollywood Reporter confirms that he passed away, reportedly after suffering a blood clot in his ankle.

Johns auditioned for the show at age 29 during the summer of 2007. After competing with other singers from around the country, he finished in eighth place when the season wrapped up in 2008. Throughout the season, he performed classic rock songs like “Light My Fire” by the Doors and “A Day in the Life” by the Beatles.

Originally from Perth, Johns moved to the United States on a tennis scholarship, hoping to pursue his dream of becoming a professional musician. He released several albums with his bands Film and another band called the Rising before competing on the Fox show.

Before auditioning for Idol, Johns had previously been signed to the label Maverick records—it was during this period that he worked with the Rising. Unfortunately, that label folded and Warner Bros. released his album straight to iTunes. After Maverick, he was signed to Columbia Records, but the west coast branch of Sony/BMG folded and along with several other developing artists, Johns was dropped. Despite being eliminated from the show, Johns released Hold Back My Heart in 2009, and his last recording was an EP titled Love & Sex that came out in 2012.

He was also friendly with Grammy-award winning producer David Foster who invited him to appear on the ...

Paul Feig May Direct A Female-Focused Reboot Of ‘Ghostbusters’

by 40 mins ago

We couldn’t dream up a better scenario for the perpetually in-development “Ghostbusters” continuation: “Bridesmaids” and “The Heat” director Paul Feig is being eyed to helm a reboot of the film featuring an all-female cast.

The Hollywood Reporter disclosed that Sony is taking a new direction, shifting focus from “Ghostbusters 3″ to a totally fresh start, and Feig’s rep confirmed to MTV News that the studio is planning a reboot.

Though formal negotiations haven’t begun, Feig is apparently Sony’s first choice to direct. We’re just gonna go ahead and let Feig muse Melissa McCarthy telegraph our thoughts on the matter.

Guess it’s time for us to brush up our fantasy casting (though you can stay, Aubrey Plaza!)

Are you down with a Paul Feig-directed “Ghostbusters” reboot? Who would you cast in his all-female version? Let us know in the comments!

Listen To Zedd Remix MAGIC!’s ‘Rude’ Live At Lollapalooza

by 42 mins ago

By Sasha Geffen

MAGIC!‘s hit song “Rude” just got a makeover courtesy of German producer Zedd, who remixed the song live for the crowds at Lollapalooza yesterday.

The 24-year-old producer worked the single into his headlining set at Perry’s Stage last night, swapping out MAGIC!’s reggae guitar riffs for hard-hitting EDM beats. “Rude” is currently occupying the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100, and it became the first reggae tune by a Canadian band to hit the top of the Billboard charts since Snow’s 1992 single “Informer”.

Festival-goers cheered and sang along to the infectious track as Zedd spun MAGIC! frontman Nasri Atweh’s vocals over big, catchy techno synths.

MAGIC! are the latest act in a long line of famous Zedd remixes—he’s taken on everyone from Black Eyed Peas to Lady Gaga to Skrillex. You can also hear his electronics on the newest single from Ariana Grande, “Break Free.”

Reading ‘Harry Potter’ Makes You A Better Person – It’s Science!

by 3 mins ago

As if “Harry Potter” fans weren’t already cool enough, there’s now SCIENTIFIC PROOF that confirms how undeniably awesome they are.

A recent study in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology shows how J.K. Rowling’s book series reduces prejudice in real life. HP readers have more positive attitudes towards minority groups like homosexuals and immigrants, BuzzFeed reports.

In other words, “Harry Potter” readers are making the world a better place. Researchers conducted three studies to support this super important fact of life.

Clapping

The first study examined how a six-week “Harry Potter” book discussion group influenced kids’ attitudes towards immigrants.
Remember this scene that singlehandedly fueled your Malfoy hatred for the rest of the series?

filthy-mudblood

Italian elementary school students who identified with Harry — that is, they aspired to be more like his character — read and discussed the above Malfoy scene, along with similar excerpts about discrimination towards minority groups like “mudbloods.” Afterwards, kids reported having more positive attitudes towards immigrants than they did before reading HP. This effect didn’t apply to those who read passages unrelated to prejudice or who didn’t personally identify with Harry’s character.

Hermoine

The second study replicated these awesome results with attitudes towards LGBT communities.

Researchers found that Italian high school students who read more HP books and who emotionally identified with Harry’s character perceived LGBT people more positively than non-HP readers did.

Dumbledore dance

The third study explored how “Harry Potter” affected older students’ views of refugees.

Megan Fox Tells ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Haters To Shove It

by 15 mins ago

Maybe she’s feeling extra-protective because her first crush was on Ninja Turtle Michaelangelo? Whatever the reason, Megan Fox hasn’t got time for your “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” hate.

At the film’s Los Angeles press conference yesterday, Fox had words for fans who’ve voiced dissatisfaction about the reboot.

“Let me tell you something about those people. How much money did ‘Transformers 4′ make?” she asked. “Exactly. Those people can complain – they all go to the theater. They’re gonna love it – and if they don’t love it, they can f-ck off, and that’s the end of that.”

This isn’t the first time Fox has stood strong in the face of negative reactions to her casting as April O’Neil, as well as general discontent over the Michael Bay-produced reboot of the beloved series.

This latest comment is essentially keeping in line with her no-BS outlook, which we find pretty refreshing. Only time will tell if her theory proves prophetic.

Are you planning to see “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” when it releases on August 8? Tell us in the comments!

One Direction Kick Off Where We Are Tour And It Has Us Giving Thanks

by 1 min ago

TORONTO, CANADA- It was a sound unlike any other, a deafening, exciting and memorable noise that your ears won’t forget for quite some time. I’m talking about the sound of 54,000 fans screaming for One Direction.

1D kicked off the North American leg of their Where We Are Tour on Friday night (August 1), with one of the hottest bands in the U.S.as their opening act, none other than 5SOS, in front of a sold out crowd at Toronto’s Rogers Centre and we were there to take it all in.

With their handmade signs in hand, their homemade T-shirts on display, fans of all ages (including some really brave dads) threw up their neon glow sticks lighting up the arena, seemingly flooring the band, who still, after four years, seemed a bit in awe of all the attention.

“It’s pretty weird and pretty amazing,” Zayn told the crowd. “Thank you so much we wouldn’t be able to do it without you.”

In between playing all of their hit songs, giving props to the crowd seemed to be the overall theme of the night, with each member personally thanking their Directioners. Now, we know we’re a pretty great group of fans, but honestly, One Direction, you are the ones who deserve all the thanks on this tour.

You put on a show that was entertaining, amusing and unpredictable, giving us all midnight memories to last a lifetime. And for those of you who haven’t gotten to see the show ...

Rob Zombie, Nathan Fillion And More ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Cameos, Revealed

by 36 mins ago

With reporting by Josh Horowitz

Movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are known for their Easter eggs, in-jokes and cameos, and the studio’s latest offering, “Guardians of the Galaxy,” is no exception.

MTV News caught up with James Gunn, who wrote and directed the movie, to get the scoop on any familiar faces — or voices — we might catch in deep space. It should come as no surprise that there are several of them.

You’ll have to watch the interview clip above to find out exactly who, but we will spoil one for you: Captain Hammer himself, Nathan Fillion.

“He’s a monstrous inmate,” Gunn said. “He’s the CGI creature who tries to, shall we say, give some tender loving to Peter Quill and then is ripped apart by Groot.”

Tsk, tsk, Nathan.

The museum curated by Benicio Del Toro’s flamboyant Collector is not only a treasure trove of oddities, but also of winks to the audience, according to Gunn.

“We’ve got everything in that museum. The entire history of the Marvel Universe is in the Collector’s Museum,” he said.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” is in theaters now.

Blood Orange Singer Accuses Lollapalooza Security Of Assault

by 43 mins ago

Chicago, IL — Dev Hynes, who performs as Blood Orange, claimed on Friday that he was assaulted by security guards following his afternoon set at Lollapalooza.

Hynes (full name Devonté Hynes), alleged that both he and girlfriend Samantha Urbani, who performed with him, were grabbed and thrown to the ground following his set. He did not say where they were or when the alleged assault happened.

A few hours before the alleged assault, Hynes posted a picture of the t-shirt he wore during his set, which featured the names of three black men who were the victims of violence. Among the names on the shirt were Trayvon Martin and Eric Gardner, the latter a man who died on July 17 after a New York police officer put him in a chokehold; the city medical examiner ruled Gardner’s death a homicide on Friday.

A spokesperson for the festival’s promoter, C3 Presents, could not be reached for comment at press time. Hynes said he was very upset by the incident and claimed that comments posted by supporters on the official Lollapalooza social media sites were being scrubbed.

Several fans posted comments in which they said that they had tried writing about the incident on Lolla’s Facebook pages only to have the posts removed. (MTV News could not independently confirm that any posts related to the alleged assault had been taken down.)

Urbani, who wore a shirt decrying police brutality during the set, said that the couple had spoken to organizers afterwards and were told that ...

Emienem Brings Out Rihanna As Surprise Guest During Lollapalooza Set

by 26 mins ago

Chicago, IL — The question all day wasn’t if Eminem would bring out a special guest for his Lollapalooza headlining slot on Friday night (August 1), but who it would be. A lot of diehards were hoping (maybe dreaming) that it would be mentor Dr. Dre.

Marshall did them one better when, 40 minutes into a energetic set, his upcoming Monster Tour mate Rihanna rose up out of the stage for a high-intensity mini-suite of duets. The crowd went nuts, to put it mildly. While Em was dressed down in grey workout shorts and a throwback LL Cool J “I’m Bad” t-shirt, Rihanna looked regal in a black head wrap, black and white mini-dress and matching scarf.

Rih Rih sounded pitch perfect at the opening of “Love the Way You Lie,” her voice echoing over the stunned crowd, who quickly whipped out their phones to get a shot of the unexpected superstar summit. Em came smashing in for his verse, stalking the stage as his partner hung back and rolled her shoulders and rocking her hips to the swaying beat.

The pair then moved right into “The Monster,” finally locking eyes for just a few moments midway through that massive hit and sizing each other up before, just like that, Rihanna was gone.

There was still plenty of show, though, as the crowd went understandably bananas when Em busted out a three-pack of oldies, starting with “My Name Is” and “The Real Slim ...
