Zone Out To Coldplay’s Avicii-Assisted ‘A Sky Full Of Stars’

by 04/29/14

As Coldplay‘s frontman Chris Martin opens up more to the media, the band does the same. Coldplay is out with another peek at their upcoming record Ghost Stories Tuesday (April 29), an Avicii-assisted jam titled “A Sky Full Of Stars.”

According to a recent interview with BBC Radio 1′s Zane Lowe in which the singer discussed his divorce from Gwyneth Paltrow for the first time, Martin penned the band’s upcoming record with love in mind — opening yourself up to love and whatever it may bring.

“I think in life everyone needs to be broken in some way,” Martin said. “I think everyone in their life goes through challenges, whether it’s love or money, kids, or illness … You have to really not run away from that stuff. Life throws these colorful challenges at you.”

So far, many of the offerings off of Ghost Stories have been rather hushed and, well, haunted — and “A Sky Full Of Stars” is no different.

Part twinkly piano ballad, part sky-reaching EDM track, it’s the perfect complement to previously released jams “Midnight,” “Magic,” “Oceans,” “Another’s Arms” and “Always In My Head.”

Lie down, look at the stars, and listen up.

The track will be available for download on Saturday with the record dropping on May 19.

Who’s Playing What In ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’?

by 04/29/14

Sorry, May the Fourth, you’ll have to find some other nerdy claim to fame. Disney dropped a surprise cast list for “Star Wars: Episode VII” this afternoon (April 29), including some surprising choices.

Star_Wars_Cast

We assume that cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker, whose return was announced alongside the new additions, will reprise their original roles. (But then again, you know what they say about assuming.)

Them aside, here’s our guide to the new additions to the announced “Star Wars: Episode VII” cast, their distinctive skills and our best guesses as to who they might be playing in the movie:

John Boyega
John Boyega
What You Know Him From: Moses in “Attack the Block”
Special Skills: Prior alien-fighting experience
What He Might Be Playing: No idea! There were early reports that Abrams was looking for a male and female in their twenties, a description Boyega would fit. If he’s the male half of the duo, who’s his counterpart?

Daisy Ridley

Daisy Ridley
What You Know Her From: You don’t. Ridley is a fresh face on the scene, with just a few non-recurring TV and short film credits to her name.
Special Skills: Unknown.
What She Might Be Playing: Could Ridley be playing the part that Lupita Nyong’o was up for? It was reported that the actress met with Abrams to play a descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Or, perhaps she’s playing the other half of the young male/female duo ...

The Hulk And Loki Are PDAing All Over Twitter

by 04/29/14

Can we talk for a second about how great the Hulk is? He’s green, he’s big, he’s mild-mannered (when not big and green), he’s played by Mark Ruffalo, so we instinctively trust him and feel an overwhelming urge to give him a hug. Pretty great!

You know what’s even greater? When the Hulk (in human form, natch, big green fingers make typing exponentially harder) shows some internet love to his bromantic interests. Last week, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” co-star Robert Downey, Jr. was on the receiving end of a Twitter PDA, and this time, a bad boy is getting some love.

What’s up, Loki, a.k.a. Tom Hiddleston, a.k.a. Ruffalo’s latest Twitter love target.

Though Hiddleston’s character antagonized Ruffalo’s in “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Ruffalo admitted to a fan that he missed the actor.

And guess what? Hiddleston misses him too! He even threw in a topical “Avengers” joke to tie it all together. D’awww.

Never one to miss the last word, Ruffalo responded with his own pun. Get it? Smash. Hulk. Har.

So there you have it. Close your Twitter tab, nothing better is going to happen there today.

Ariana Grande’s ‘Problem’: 5 Unexpected Throwbacks In Her New Track

by 04/29/14

Ariana Grande released her new track “Problem” featuring Iggy Azalea on Monday, and the song is so refreshing in the midst of the anthemic rock, emotional ballads and selfie songs that are currently inhabiting the airwaves.

The song is so excitingly new but also decidedly so retro — the kind of ’90s-era R&B sound that Ariana has admitted to striving for. The cranky sax, the whispered chorus, the airy harmonies and Iggy’s snarky feature &#8212 all tied in with a juicy modern beat.

While “Problem” is probably the freshest pop song of the moment, little tidbits from the track draw reference to songs we loved 10 years ago. If parts of the song sound familiar, it may be that Ariana and her team pulled bits and pieces from hits of days’ past. It’s not a vintage throwback, seeing as she’s only going back a few years for inspo, so let’s call it her mini-throwback.

Here are a few songs where Grande may have gotten her groove for “Problem.”

1. “Get Right” – J.Lo
When it comes to saxophone loops, J.Lo’s “Get Right” was all over it. It’s the same notes over and over, but its attitude doesn’t let you zone out, reaching out and pulling you right into the song if you’re someone who tends to drift away. (I remember first hearing the song on my bus ride to school in 2004 and thinking that the sax had no place in pop/hip-hop music. I was wrong.)

2. “Wait (The Whisper ...

Scarlett Johansson Or Scarily Realistic Action Figure?

by 04/29/14

Hot Toys has always been known for their scarily realistic action figures, but the “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” collectible for Scarlett Johansson‘s Black Widow is so insanely accurate, it’s one baby bump away from just being Johansson.

The 1/16th scale figure is just a prototype now, but will reportedly have 30 points of articulation, nine interchangeable gloved palms, two pistols, Widow’s Bite bracelets, a mobile phone and the ability to commune psychically with Johansson. Just kidding on the last part.

There’s no price as of yet, though it’s available for pre-sale at some retailers for $219.99.
