Darlene Love Made The Oscars So Much More Fun To Watch, But Who Is She?

She may not have sported a big hat while belting out Pharrell's Oscar nominated song "Happy," but all eyes were on "20 Feet From Stardom" star Darlene Love when the film's team took the stage to accept the Academy Award for Best Documentary.

The Morgan Neville-directed doc centers on the rich world of music's best backup singers; talented performers who often toil just outside the spotlight and rarely get the kudos (and, yes, the awards) they deserve.

The film premiered to plenty of love at last year's Sundance Film Festival, and its awards-season run has been similarly rewarding: Neville's doc won a slew of accolades, including a Critics' Choice Award for Best Documentary Feature and a place on the National Board of Review's list of Top Five Documentaries, before topping off its run with an Oscar. And along the way, Love herself has become one of the film's most dazzling stars.

But just who is the enchanting songstress who captivated both the film's audience and every single person at tonight's Oscars ceremony when she expressed her joy in the best way she knows how — through stirring song?

The 72-year-old singer first started out belting out jams in her local church choir in Southern California, before being picked to join the Blossoms. An all-girl group that never quite hit the big time, the gals did, however, work with legendary producer Phil Spector during the height of his creative output in the early 1960s.

Love and the Blossoms can be heard singing backup on such well-known songs as Shelly Fabares' "Johnny Angel" and a ...

First Big-Screen Role, First Oscar: Lupita Nyong’o Wins Best Supporting Actress

The tightest race of the Academy Awards — Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role — has been decided, with Lupita Nyong'o winning the Oscar.

The "12 Years a Slave" actress looked dazed as she stood after her name was called, hugging director Steve McQueen and co-star Chiwetel Ejiofor before clutching her heart and ascending the stage. Presenter Christoph Waltz handed her the gold statuette, and she proceeded to tearfully say, of her role as beleaguered young slave Patsey in the big-screen adaptation of Solomon Northup's memoir, "It doesn't escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else's, and so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance, and to Solomon [Northup]: thank you for telling her story and your own."

She went on to thank McQueen for his guidance, saying her time with him "has been the joy of my life." Nyong'o thanked Ejiofor (who played Northup) for his "fearlessness" and called Michael Fassbender (who plays Patsey's slave owner Edwin Epps) her "rock." She also gave a shout-out to her date, brother Junior, saying, "You are my best friend." She finished her touching speech with the promise, "Every time I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you're from, your dreams are valid." The two front-runners for the Supporting Actress statuette (which has been fodder for much debate) were Jennifer Lawrence, who plays fast-talking, fiery Rosalyn Rosenfeld in director David ...

U2 Get Standing O From Jared Leto For Dramatic Oscar Performance

U2 have never met a big stage they couldn't hold and Sunday night's (March 2) Oscars were no exception. The legendary Irish rockers performed their Best Original Song nominated anthem "Ordinary Love" from "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" unplugged, but with an electric charge that that captivated the star-studded audience.

Playing on a spare stage lit by six large spotlights, the band played an acoustic version of the tune, with singer Bono hitting the falsetto highs of the chorus, "We can't fall any further/If we can't feel ordinary love/We cannot reach any higher," as images of Mandela illuminated the screen behind them.

The stripped down take found Bono crouched down on the lip of the stage staring intently into the crowd, which rewarded the quartet at song's end with a standing ovation led by Best Supporting Actor winner Jared Leto
.

On a night that already saw musical numbers from fellow Best Original Song nominees Pharrell Williams and Karen O, U2's set was an emotional highpoint in the evening's proceedings.

It was also yet another honor for the veteran band, who already have two Golden Globes, including one from January for "Ordinary Love," as well as for "The Hands That Built America" in 2003 from "Gangs of New York," which also earned them their first Best Original Song Oscar nomination.

The song is an emotional one for the conscious rockers, who Bono said in a recent interview had worked on behalf of Mandela's cause since they were teenagers. The performance was especially poignant in light of the anti-apartheid icon's death in December at age ...

‘Girls’: Every Sneaky Or Outright Nasty Thing Hannah’s Cousin Says To Her

Not all of us have the smoothest of relationships with our extended families. There's always a weird aunt, stern grandfather, grabby nephew, what have you. In the case of Hannah Horvath on the latest episode of HBO's "Girls," "Flo," that dreaded relative is the platonic ideal of passive aggressive cousin. Sarah Steele guest stars as Rebecca, Hannah's jumper-wearing, med school-attending cousin with a razor tongue. Our diagnosis: a chronic case of resting bitch face.

As family legend has it, Rebecca has been less than friendly to our heroine ever since a 7-year-old Hannah told her that her father had been convicted of insider trading. Since then, ol' Becky's been making up for lost daddy time by throwing passive aggressive, and sometimes outright nasty barbs, at Hannah.

This week, we took the liberty of recording all of Rebecca's burns. Incidentally, this means the below is nearly every one of Steele's character's lines, transcribed. (There were a few "byes" omitted for lacking a relative degree of menace and, ironically, dismissal.) All you're missing to complete the scene is Steele's perfect version of dead-eyed stank face.

» "I don't think that's a funny nickname for Grandma."

» "I think I have to go to a Starbucks to study, because I'm in the middle of exams and I just like, can't work here."

» "I'm not, like, really going there to meet a man. I actually really hate when people say that, because I feel like it diminishes what I'm doing, and like I'm becoming a doctor myself, I'm not trying to marry one. Like, I'm not becoming a ...

Jared Leto Is Just Psyched The Oscars Are Close To His House

Jordan Catalano is an Oscar winner! Jared Leto nabbed the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance as Rayon, a transsexual AIDS sufferer in "Dallas Buyers Club."

Looking dapper in a white tux with red bow tie on MTV's Oscars 2014 Live Red Carpet, Leto "classed it up" with MTV's Josh Horowitz, explaining, "I'm really grateful. I'm here with my mom and my brother. I don't live too far from here, so it's kind of awesome to be so close to home and to be celebrating like this. So [I have] a lot of gratitude. A lot of excitement."

Leto's Supporting Actor speech included a poignant note about his mother, a high school dropout and single mom who always encouraged him to work towards his dreams of the arts. Along with honoring his family, he dedicated his award to "the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS."

Leto told Horowitz he wasn't worried about the pressure to perform onstage if he won (still only a possibility during their pre-show chat), explaining, "Nobody's perfect — you're gonna get up there and if you're lucky enough to get up there, you've got a great problem. You're gonna be so nervous, you're gonna try to remember all the right things to say, and to pay tribute to the people that really mean a lot to you. And it's all good stuff, so if it's imperfect, if I'm out of my mind and babbling, it's fine. I'm just happy to be here."

We think he nailed it in a ...

Ellen DeGeneres Just Took The Greatest Selfie In The History Of The Universe

The world of selfies is divided into two classes: There are selfies, and then there are selfies that have Jennifer Lawrence sitting on Meryl Streep's lap.

The earth was on the receiving end of the latter type of selfie at the Oscars Sunday night (March 2), when social media-happy host Ellen DeGeneres pulled together celebs from the first few rows of the audience — among them Lawrence, Streep, Channing Tatum, Lupita Nyong'o, Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey, as well as others — for what she called the "most retweeted selfie of all time."

"If only Bradley's arm was longer," she captioned the picture on Twitter. "Best photo ever."

We're inclined to agree.

If you want to live inside this moment just as much as we do, don't worry: We GIFfed it for you. Stay here forever.

Eat your heart out, Jordan Catalano: Jared Leto has an Oscar.

His performance as transgender AIDS patient Rayon in sent him home with the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor on Sunday night (March 2), as he triumphed over a field of impressive performances by Michael Fassbender ("12 Years a Slave,") Jonah Hill (and his porcelain veneers in "The Wolf of Wall Street"), Bradley Cooper ("American Hustle") and newcomer Barkhad Abdi ("Captain Phillips").

And, boy, did he look pretty. Blue eyes sparkling, long locks flowing, Leto delivered a simple and moving speech, dedicated in equal parts to his mother, to the 36 million victims of AIDS in the past three decades and to people struggling in the Ukraine and Venezuela. He also gave a shout-out to his band, 30 Seconds to Mars, which has kept him busy for the past six years.

"To all the dreamers, we are here," Leto said, inspired by his mom. "And as you struggle to make your dreams happen to live the impossible, we're thinking of you tonight."

"To the 36 million victims of the AIDS crisis," he said, holding his golden figurine aloft, "I stand with you and for you."

Leto took a break from film for more than a decade before taking on the role of Rayon, and his success in Hollywood might signal more big things to come for the 42-year-old actor.
