Twitter is a great place to be opinionated — that is, until you express an unpopular opinion and begin to receive death threats. That's what Earl Sweatshirt learned when he announced to followers last week that he wasn't really feeling Jay-Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail. But even with all the backlash, Earl tells MTV News that he stands firmly behind his opinion.

Hov and Magna Carta began trending on the Fourth of July, when the album became available on the Samsung Magna Carta app and subsequently leaked on the Internet, giving fans plenty of time to listen ahead of its official release date. Some listeners gave it rave reviews, others gave it a lukewarm nod, and Earl Sweatshirt had a definitive opinion in the other direction.

"If you really f---ed with magna carta then unfollow me," he tweeted on July 11. "im gonna listen to allure and eat a breakfast burrito." The stream of hateful tweets followed almost immediately, and for transparency's sake, Earl retweeted plenty of the venom that was directed his way.

"I was not expecting that," he told MTV News before hitting the stage at his Vitamin Water Uncapped performance in New York on Monday. "Because I wasn't trying to come foul at Jay-Z, it's just not my favorite album by him, but I f----ing love Jay-Z."

As the barrage of tweets kept pouring in, Earl joked on Twitter, "hahah welp theres goes the last of the black fans i had." That said, the Odd Future rapper isn't going to retract his statement.

Social media became the de facto platform for celebrities pushing for justice for Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old high school student from Florida who was shot by George Zimmerman, 28, who claimed he shooting was in self-defense. After a was handed down to Zimmerman on Saturday, the man behind the Million Hoodies protests urges celebs and people to keep fighting.

"My vision for Million Hoodies is really for us to be what the Truth Campaign was for big tobacco," says Million Hoodies founder Daniel Maree. "That's what we want to be against the gun lobby and against racial profiling."

Maree, a digital strategist, first founded Million Hoodies in March of 2012, a month after Martin was found shot and killed, Zimmerman standing over him with a handgun. Martin was unarmed, carrying only a bottle of iced tea and a bag of Skittles, wearing a hoodie.

"The big impetus for Million Hoodies for me was reading about the Trayvon Martin case and noticing that there was no national news coverage of the story, noticing that the police hadn't arrested George Zimmerman and feeling that I have been in that situation before," Maree told MTV News. "I spent two years in Gainesville, Florida, as a high schooler, and I personally had experiences walking home from school sometimes. I would get stopped by the police for no reason other than I was an African American in a predominantly white neighborhood."

Robin Thicke's video for has become the runaway viral video hit of the summer, having amassed over 94 million views since launching in March. It probably doesn't hurt that the video is chock full of models.

The clip follows Thicke, Pharrell and T.I. as they prance around a sparse room with scantily clad (or in that other version, topless) ladies, as hashtags like #Thicke splash across the screen. "I wrote the idea as a nude video and refused to do the job when they said they didn't want a nude version, that no one would see it," director Diane Martel explained to MTV News about the videos. "A week went by and they begged me to do it and said I could do a nude version, if I also did them a favor and did a dressed version. I like both versions now. I think Robin likes both too, we all do."

The video, serving as the lead visual for his July 30 album of the same name, has certainly stirred up conversation in the process. Speaking with the BBC, the "Blurred Lines" crooner said he actually preferred the clothed version of the kitschy video, but it was his wife, actress Paula Patton, who pushed him to release both versions. With her seal of approval, any reservations he had about how "sleazy" the video would appear were eased.

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber continue to keep Selenators and Beliebers guessing about what exactly is going on between them. They initially made breakup headlines last November, but in the months since, they have redefined the term "on-again, off-again relationship."

New photos of the couple, taken earlier this month and just making the rounds on Tuesday (July 16), show the twosome snuggling at a Fourth of July bash held at a Hollywood Hills home. The photos, which seem to suggest that Bieber and Gomez have reconciled again, are making headlines just as Gomez is opening up about the paparazzi attention she receives.

"There'll be days where I'm not bothered at all and I can just go out with my friends to the movies or walk around the park," she told the British Guardian in a recent interview. First, the iconic Moonman got a serious makeover from artist KAWS, and now the nomination for the top prize at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards is getting a facelift as well.

MTV is set to make history on Wednesday at 8 a.m. ET when the nominees for the night's top prize, Video of the Year, will be unveiled exclusively on MTV's Instagram and Vine accounts. It will mark the first time an awards show has ever announced nominations through those social media platforms.

Each hour after the Video of the Year reveal, MTV will post additional Instagram and Vine videos highlighting the nominees in other categories. It's just the latest in a series of iconic firsts for the 30th anniversary show, which will touch down in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center on August 25.

After the old-school Moonman made the trip from L.A. to New York earlier this summer to Barclays - where the VMAs will make history as the first major annual awards show to take place in the borough -- internationally famous artist and provocateur KAWS unleashed his one-time-only redesign of the show's trophy.

"It's such a strong, iconic thing. Everyone sees the Moonman and knows right off the bat what it is," KAWS told MTV News. Justin Bieber has kept fans in the dark when it comes to what his next single, will sound like — until now. On Monday, the singer finally gave fans a chance to hear 30 seconds of the slow-burning jam.

The tune serves as the soundtrack for the commercial for his new fragrance, the Key. Over an R&B-inspired beat, the singer repeats the word "heartbreaker." Manager Scooter Braun has said the song will end the critics' "witch hunt" against the 19-year-old.

Fans are eating the tease up. In the hours since Bieber dropped the commercial, which features him driving up to a hotel in a sports car and later romancing a young woman, they have been gushing over the clip.

"Justin only says 'Heartbreaker' in the commercial and we're already dying," @BiebersBrows wrote. "Just imagine our reaction when the full song comes out."

What surprised some fans was the way the song sounds. It doesn't favor some of Justin's other dance-music-influenced singles like "Beauty and a Beat" or "As Long as You Love Me," but instead has more of a "Boyfriend" vibe. @Iifenote wrote, "I didn't think heartbreaker would sound like that."

Panic! at the Disco last album was called Vices & Virtues, so this time, they're switching things up: their new record is very much about the virtues of vice.

Yes, from its title — Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die! (taken from Hunter S. Thompson's apocalyptic ode to excess, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas") — to its thematic inspiration — Panic's Sin City roots — their new album is a decidedly dark, slightly depraved thing. And, as frontman Brendon Urie explained to MTV News, the band is delighting in all that decadence.

"The songs I was writing came from me seeing Vegas in a new light; I mean, when we left Vegas, we were 17, 18 and we were pretty bitter because we couldn't do all the things everyone else could. We couldn't play gigs, we weren't allowed in the bars, so we were pissed off," he said. "But in the past couple years I've visited Vegas quite a bit, and I started doing things I never thought I would do, like going out to clubs, and for some reason that really struck a chord with me. People go there to lose themselves in the moment, and drop their guard, and it hit me in a way. Like, 'Wow, I want to do that. I want to make music like that, that moves people, that's a party, that makes you feel good.'"

If you haven't hopped aboard the train yet, you may want to hurry: The big-screen adaptation of Veronica Roth's best-selling young-adult novel is barreling down the tracks into theaters — gaining plenty of buzz along the way.

Set in a near-future Chicago in which society has been divided into five factions each representing a different virtue — Abnegation (selflessness), Erudite (intelligence), Dauntless (bravery), Amity (peacefulness) and Candor (honesty) — the story centers around 16-year-old Beatrice "Tris" Prior, who leaves her family's faction, Abnegation, for the daring world of the Dauntless.

Star Shailene Woodley's Tris is hardly the first dystopian dame to grace the silver screen, but when MTV News visited the set recently, the 21-year-old actress explained that she doesn't view her character as your prototypical hotshot heroine.
