Chris Kelly’s Cause Of Death Revealed As Drug Overdose

Exactly two months after Kris Kross rapper Chris Kelly died, his cause of death has been revealed on Monday (July 1) to be a drug overdose.

The 34-year-old rapper was found unresponsive in his Atlanta home on May 1, passing away in a nearby hospital shortly after. When an initial autopsy failed to reveal the cause of death, family and friends were forced to wait for the results of a toxicology report. According to TMZ, the report from the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office found Kelly to have a fatal combination of drugs in his system.

Although specifics on which drugs were not revealed, in an earlier police report obtained by MTV News, Kelly’s mother, Donna Kelly Pratte spoke to an officer stating her son had taken a mixture of heroin and cocaine the night before.

Also known as Mac Daddy, Kelly, and his rap partner Chris Smith, hit the rap scene in 1992 with “Jump.” Clad in backward hats and jerseys, Kris Kross created a hip-hop movement with their platinum album Totally Krossed Out, following it up with Da Bomb in 1993 and Young, Rich & Dangerous in 1996. The duo parted ways shortly after to pursue solo careers, although in his last interview with MTV News, the late Kelly kept open the idea of a possible reunion.

The family has yet to release a statement in response to the reports.
