‘Cinderella’ Finds Its Prince: ‘Game Of Thrones’ Star Richard Madden

Robb Stark may be King of the North on “Game of Thrones,” but on the big screen, he’s being demoted to the status of prince.

Richard Madden, who plays heir to Ned Stark and chief adversary to King Joffrey on HBO’s hit drama series, is set to play Prince Charming in Disney’s forthcoming live-action adaptation of “Cinderella.” He will star in the film opposite Lily James (“Downton Abbey”) as the title character and Academy Award-nominated actress Cate Blanchett (“The Hobbit”) as the infamous Wicked Stepmother.

“Thor” director Kenneth Branagh took over directing responsibilities for the film after “Never Let Me Go” filmmaker Mark Romanek left the project due to “creative differences.” The script was co-authored by Aline Brosh McKenna (“The Devil Wears Prada”) and Chris Weitz (“About a Boy”).

Despite having his hands full commanding the armies of the North and negotiating a recent marriage on “Game of Thrones,” Madden has a remarkably full slate of projects on the horizon. He is also starring in director Patrice Leconte’s WWI romance “A Promise,” the erotic odyssey “Long Nights Short Mornings” and the TV miniseries “Klondike.”

“Cinderella” is Disney’s latest live-action update of an animated classic, after having mounted versions of “101 Dalmatians” and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” in past years. The studio also has a “Wicked”-like version of “Sleeping Beauty,” “Maleficent,” set for release later in 2013, which stars Angelina Jolie (“A Mighty Heart”) and focuses on the slumbering princess’ iconic nemesis.

“Harry Potter” alum Watson reportedly turned down the role of Cinderella last month.

“Cinderella” is scheduled for release next year.
