Jay Z Brings Pimp C Back For His Birthday On ‘Tom Ford’ Remix

While hip-hop fans were celebrating Jay Z‘s 44th birthday on Wednesday, the hip-hop mogul spent his day saluting one of rap’s fallen stars. Chad “Pimp C” Butler died six years ago on December 4, 2007, and Hov honored him by releasing a remix to his “Tom Ford” single with a surprise verse from the fallen UGK rapper and producer.

DJ Funkmaster Flex premiered the track on his blog site on Wednesday night, just a few hours Hov took to his own Life + Times site to rank his catalog. The Timbaland-produced remix starts off just as it did on Hov’s Magna Carta… Holy Grail LP — there are the Jay’s musing of his Euro trips, his bad H-Town bitch (that’s Beyonce’ to you), and course, his celebration of Tom Ford.

Shortly after the three-minute mark, the Pimp makes his grand posthumous entrance. “Check one, two; one, two bitch. Is the mic on,” he asks before going into his verse, which was recorded before he passed away in a Los Angeles hotel room in 2007 from a drug overdose and a pre-existing medical condition.

Hov first hooked up with Pimp C and his UGK partner Bun B back in 1999 when he tapped the duo to perform on “Big Pimpin’.” Though the self-proclaimed Underground Kings had enjoyed success prior to working with Hov, but the guest spot did a lot for the group’s popularity.

While Hov was busy releasing new music, Moguldom Films marked the day by releasing the trailer for their upcoming documentary “A Genius Leaves the Hood: The Unauthorized Story of Jay Z.” The trailer doesn’t present us with any new information but features notables like Hot 97 DJ Mister Cee, Bobbito Garcia and Hov’s erstwhile mentor Jaz-O.
