Kanye West Gave ‘Pacific Rim’ ‘A Little Street Cred,’ Cast Says

Early reviews can make or break a potential blockbuster — especially a non-sequel like “Pacific Rim” — so you can imagine director Guillermo del Toro and the cast’s delight when Kanye West decided to share his thoughts about the sci-fi epic with his Twitter followers.

“I saw a pre-screening of Pacific Rim yesterday and it’s easily one of my favorite movies of all time,” West wrote. “This is not another ‘Robot’ movie. Guillermo del Toro is a master.”

MTV News asked del Toro, the so-called “master,” at the red-carpet premiere for “Pacific Rim” what it was like getting such praise from West. “Anytime anyone likes my work, that really, really is very emotional for me because an artist not exactly a socially able person,” he said. “We are dysfunctional, socially. We work for what we create. I work for my monsters. I work for my robots. To see people connect with them emotionally is a blessing.”

The film’s star, Charlie Hunnam of “Sons of Anarchy” fame, was just honored to hear from an artist he respects, especially as his career in movies is just taking off. “It doesn’t get much cooler than Kanye West, so I certainly think it gives us a little street cred. It’s just exciting. It’s always exciting when, as an artist, you really respect and admire someone’s work, and that kind of comes back,” Hunnam said. “To have someone like Kanye, who I have been listening to for years, give us such a glowing endorsement was really, really exciting.”

Some, as Charlie Day pointed out, were quick to criticize West for tweeting about a movie rather than focusing on the recent birth of his daughter, North, something the “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” star didn’t agree with. “I think Kanye saw the movie. I think he enjoyed the movie, and I think he wanted to help us get the word out, so he tweeted about it. I think it’s great,” Day said. “I’ve certainly read things where people were kind of jumping on him for not tweeting about his kid but tweeting about a movie, but you know what? Your kid is your private life and a movie is entertainment in your public life. I think it’s the kind of thing you should tweet about. Look, Kanye is my boy now, and if I ever meet him, I will thank him.”

“Pacific Rim” opens in theaters this Friday with early showing beginning on Thursday night.
