Kanye West, Rick Rubin Get Creative With Acceptance Speech For Tribeca Film Festival

Kanye West’s symphonic albums wouldn’t be the same without the use of 808 drum machines, so ‘Ye and producer Rick Rubin were tapped to accept an award on behalf of the Roland TR-808 drum machine, at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival Disruptive Innovation Awards.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t be in town for the show, so they prepared a little something special.

It’s not uncommon for celebrities to pre-tape acceptance speeches ahead of time–but they usually don’t turn out like this. Director Mark Romanek compiled a very experimental video clip of West and Rubin “accepting the award,” without actually getting them to shoot anything new.

The video features a mash-up of sounds and images, including snippets from ‘Ye’s Yeezus album and the film version of Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

One of the strangest parts includes footage of Rubin from another interview, dubbed over with a foreign voice, with subtitles that read,”Kanye and I would like to give thanks on behalf of the Roland TR-808 drum machiKanye West And Rick Rubin Tribute The 808s Drums With Quirky Videone. It continues to be responsible for new music some 30 years after its release and discontinuation.”

It’s unlikely that most celebrities will follow Kanye and Rick Rubin’s lead on this one, but it’s certainly an interesting departure from the norm.
