Lady Gaga Was ‘Hurting’ When She Wrote ‘Applause’

Lady Gaga has never been shy about her love for her Little Monsters. And on her latest anthem, the Mother Monster thanks them for sticking by her through thick and thin.

After the track got an early release on Monday, her producer, DJ White Shadow, got on the phone with MTV News to open up about the evolution of the track.

“She has a complete and total adoration for her fans. I’ve never seen anyone in my entire life work as hard or do as much for her fans. It’s a back-and-forth thing. She does so much for them that they naturally want to do stuff for her. The reason why those kids are so into Lady Gaga is because Lady Gaga is so into them,” he told MTV News on Wednesday (August 14). “I will say that every single song on this record is for the fans.”

And while they had been working on “Applause” for some time, the song took on a whole new meaning after Gaga, who is slated to perform live at the VMAs on August 25, canceled her Born This Way tour back in February to undergo hip surgery.

“Let me tell you something, and I mean this completely honestly, every single song she has some kind of meaning to it. When she wrote [‘Applause’] that’s what she meant… over a period of time it develops into a cohesive idea,” he explained. “We write the songs in parts. So basically what I’m saying is that all of them have some kind of meaning. And when she wrote that [song] … she was hurting that whole entire time. And after she figured out what it was that was hurting and figured how severe that was and had that time off, we had time to go back and like really sit around and craft and take it to the next level.”

He added, “When she did that to her hip we didn’t know what the single was going to be. We had no idea.”

Gaga shared what the song means to her during her interview with Ryan Seacreast earlier this week. “I was in a lot of pain, but didn’t know where really. I have a strong threshold for pain, so I kept slapping myself saying, ‘Get it together.’ The only thing that kept me going was the applause,” she said. “And I was able to drown out the pain and finish the show.”

With the song out, Gaga’s fans are now looking forward to the Inez & Vinoodh-directed video, which drops Monday during “Good Morning America.” And, White Shadow teased that Gaga was just as dedicated to getting every detail of the video right as she was to making sure the song sounded great.

“I think you are going to like the video very much. I watched the whole editing process. I went to New York with her and sat in a room for two days while she color corrected and went through the video frame by frame. She is such an intricate part of everything that moves, that it’s all a part of the same vision,” he said. “She’s very into making sure that everything has its place. The video is really fun and exciting and she looks awesome in it. There’s concepts. It’s Lady Gaga! It’s a Lady Gaga video! It’s a good video. It’s really fun.”

“Applause” is the lead single off Gaga’s November 11 album release, ARTPOP. On August 25, she will perform the song live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center during the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. She joins other A-listers Katy Perry, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke, who will also take the stage at the show.
