If you find it hard to imagine a new Big Tymers album without founding member Mannie Fresh, you’re not alone. Mannie Fresh thinks so too.
Earlier this month, Lil Wayne revealed to MTV News that Cash Money Records was planning to release a new Big Tymers album with himself, Birdman and Drake. Then, on last week’s episode of “RapFix Live,” the #1 Stunna confirmed that there are plans to record the LP, and former CM producer Mannie Fresh will not be a part of it.
“It’s kinda like doing a Jackson 5 album with Boyz II Men. Two different eras, great artists, but Boyz II Men is not the Jackson 5,” Fresh said on Wednesday (May 15) when he called into “RapFix Live” via Skype.
In the beginning, Fresh was Cash Money’s sole producer, laying beats for all the tracks on high-profile CM albums like Juvenile’s 400 Degreez, B.G.’s Chopper City in the Ghetto and Lil Wayne’s solo debut Tha Block is Hot. In 1998, he partnered with Birdman, and together, they released How You Luv That as Big Tymers. As a duo, they would go on to release three more albums, but not long after dropping 2003’s Big Money Heavyweight, Fresh left Cash Money due to a financial dispute.
“I don’t bash Cash Money, Birdman, or none of them. It’s really on, I’m just striving on just getting what I deserve, you know, what I put in,” Mannie said. “Honestly I think Drake is a great artist, I think Wayne is a great artist, but they not the Big Tymers.”
Fresh said he has no problem with Birdman or anyone from YMCMB; he just wants what he feels is his just due. “I’m too old to be making dis songs. I’m too wise to be making shots at anybody, but my thing is I’m a business man at the end of it,” he said.
As far as Big Tymers is concerned Mannie just feels that it isn’t the same without him. “You can call it whatever you want to call it, but you can’t call it a Big Tymers album,” he protested.
