Lore’l Goes From ‘Love & Hip Hop’ To Billboard With Mixtape

Fire Starter: Lore’l

Real Spit: Reality television is a tricky thing. While it can give fans an intimate look into the lives of their favorite artists, sometimes things get too real and the image just can’t be erased. Up-and-coming Brooklyn rapper Lore’l was a bit hesitant to join the cast of VH1’s “Love & Hip Hop: New York,” but ultimately she made it all work in her favor.

“I already had buzz going on and radio spins and all of that. I really had to look at it if I wanted to use that ‘Love & Hip Hop’ platform to make my music bigger or was it gonna hurt me,” Lore’l told Mixtape Daily of her original hesitation to star alongside the likes of Joe Budden, Consequence and R&B singer Olivia.

Clearly the exposure paid off. On Monday, the “LHHNY” cast wrapped up their final reunion episode, marking the end of the season. On the same day, Lore’l, who hails from Brooklyn, but also reps New Jersey, dropped her latest mixtape Billboard Bytch. “I was shooting the whole time I was recording so a lot of the inspiration I got was from the situations I was going through,” she said. “I just felt like it was about time to let people know what I’ve been working on and what I’ve been doing.”

The 16-track mixtape features appearances from We the Best rapper Vado and West Coast spitter Problem and then of course there is Lore’l herself. With a foul mouth swagger and cutesy voice, Lore’l does more than hold her own on the tape’s opener “Outta They League” and the Ma$e-inspired “What the Hell.” On the latter she spits with a veteran’s confidence. “Tight dresser, drunk like Ke$ha/ Smokin’ on Kisha, I don’t ever need a f—in’ feature,” she rhymes before crowning herself as rap’s future.

It’s not all rambunctious however. On “We Go Together” she spits sweet nothings to her beau and on “Take Me Away” she offers an 1980s rock vibe. Through it all though Lore’l seems to light up the most on her party-hoppin’ ode “Tear the Club Up.” “I had to make a little anthem to let people know what it was,” she said. “Anybody that’s ever seen me out knows how I’ma do in the clubs. We gonna stand on the couch, we taking all the guys from y’all, [and] my guys are taking all the girls.”
