M. Night Shyamalan Plots Out ‘Unbreakable 2’

M. Night Shyamalan‘s pedigree as an auteur might have fallen far enough that he’s second- (or third-) billed on “After Earth” following Will and Jaden Smith, but he’s still crafted some of the most beloved stories of the past 15 years. And in a recent conversation with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz, Shyamalan indicated that he might be getting closer to revisiting one of those stories, the superhero movie-without-a-comic book “Unbreakable.”

When asked how much he’s thought about the possibility of returning to the world of superhuman heroes and villains populated by Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, Shyamalan said, “I have seriously… as long as it can be connected to something that I’m feeling right now, then it’ll work for me. It’ll be valid and I’ll enjoy it. If I feel like it’s a mechanical thing and I’ll be doing it because it’ll be profitable or successful, that will just be hollow.”

The first film hinted at a series of others in which Willis and Jackson’s characters square off against one another. Shyamalan said that the film accurately represented his artistic ambitions at the time, and it will take that sort of connection to a follow-up story in order to get the ball rolling on a sequel. “I can look at the movies, and regardless of their success or their reception, they’re honest to me and they represent who I am — and that’s an amazing thing to be able to say,” Shyamalan said.

“So my agenda is to make another one, I just have to figure out a plot that makes sense,” he continued. “I’m close, though. On my dressing table, I have a whole list of notes about it.”
