Good things come to those who wait. Nobody knows that better than Robin Thicke, who has waited a decade for his first chart-topper. His patience will be rewarded next week when his sixth solo album, Blurred Lines, tops the Billboard 200 album chart thanks to sales of nearly 177,000.
The title track, arguably the hottest hit (and video) of the summer, helped Thicke win out over three other debuts, including the best-ever showing for hard rockers Five Finger Death Punch (I>The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell: Volume 1, 112,000), as well as a career-best for rapper Tech N9Ne (Something Else, #4, 58,000) and a decent entry by the reunited Backstreet Boys (In a World Like This, #5, 48,000) and a #7 entry for “X Factor” boy band Emblem 3 (Nothing to Lose, #7, 46,000).
Jay Z’s Magna Carta … Holy Grail slipped another spot to #3 on sales of 62,000 as Jigga nears the 800,000 mark in a month and Selena Gomez’s Stars Dance dipped seven spots to #8, with sales dropping 68 percent after last week’s #1 debut to 31,000.
Elsewhere on the charts: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ breakthrough, The Heist, could move past the one million mark in the next few weeks and Kanye West’s Yeezus is within spitting distance of 500,000 after seven weeks on the charts.
Next week will bring the new album from no-longer-speaking-to-each-other duo The Civil Wars, and the latest NOW compilation.
Thicke can claim a chart double-double, as the “Blurred Lines” single was back in the #1 spot on the Billboard Digital Songs chart, moving another 405,000 copies, making it the second-best-selling single of the year with 4.3 million in sales. (Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” is #1 with 5.8 million.)
Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” was up a spot to #2 (173,000), as was Jay Z’s “Holy Grail” (#3, 162,000) and Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” (#4, 155,000). Actress Anna Kendrick’s viral hit “Cups” stormed up six spots and back into the top 10 at #5 (110,000) and Avicii’s “Wake Me Up!” leaped 23 places to #9 on sales of 100,000.
