From here on out, it just gets tougher. did its best to keep spirits high Tuesday night (December 3) as a nervous top six awaited their fate. Only five would move on to the semi-finals next week, leaving coaches Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green pleading for the audience vote.
Newlywed and pregnant Kelly Clarkson spread some holiday cheer with the opening performance in a glittering red holiday mini. Singing “Underneath the Tree,” the former guest mentor added some pep to the elimination show as her dancing elves handed out gifts to the audience. Admitting she’s “been better” since getting pregnant, Clarkson proved she’s still got it.
The only way to follow up a powerhouse like that would be to bring together the three strongest vocalists in the competition. And so came Tessanne Chin, Matthew Schuler and Jacquie Lee belting “You Got the Love” in beautiful unison.
The moment stayed positive for the youngest singer in the competition as Christina Aguilera’s protégé Lee was announced as the first save, moving on to the top five next week.
“Silver Bells” began ringing soon after as coach Blake Shelton was sweetly reunited onstage with season-one finalist Xenia. The once shy girl showed her growth into a mature young woman and performer, singing strong with her former mentor. The next to be saved was Team Blake’s only remaining member, Cole Vosbury.
In usual “Voice” fashion, though, the show was broken up with some fun confessionals. Tonight we learned what the coaches and singers would be if they weren’t artists with the ever-eccentric Cee Lo revealing he would be a “veterinarian specializing in the birds and bees.” Of course. And what’s something they didn’t know before joining the show? Vosbury, for one, didn’t realize how good he looks in a vest and Shelton wished he invested his money better so he wouldn’t have to take this job. Bazinga.
Group performances continued with acoustic performers Vosbury, James Wolpert and Will Champlin’s “More Than Words.” The smooth performance left the audience and host Carson Daly mesmerized, and it only got better as the entire top six converged for “Holy Night.” Hugging and holding hands on stage, it was clear the finalists were more than contestants, rather a mini family.
Sadly, the family was about to be broken up yet again with Team Adam’s Tessanne Chin and Will Champlin finding themselves saved, leaving a crushing pair of Team Christina’s Matthew Schuler and Team Adam’s James Wolpert in the bottom two.
In a last ditch attempt to muster up votes for the “Voice Save,” Levine said Wolpert was “one of the best singers I’ve ever been in the room with.” Aguilera, on the other hand, took it back to Schuler’s blind audition where he made history being the first contestant to receive a four-chair turn, insinuating he deserved to be there.
Alas, only one could be saved and as the camera went in for their final close-ups we saw Schuler mouth, “whatever you want, God,” just before Wolpert was announced as the final performer to move on to the semi-finals.
