Spotify’s 24 million global users were busy in 2013 — assailing their ears (in a pleasant way) with 4.5 billion hours of streaming (which is roughly nearly 50,000 years!). So what tunes were the majority of those lifetimes spent listening to?
That would be Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Yup, not only did the duo scoop up three MTV VMAs, a couple of AMAs and some serious chart cred this year, they were also the most-listened to act on one of the world’s most popular music subscription services. Not bad for a dude who thought the Internet would have when he was coming up.
According to Spotify, not only were Macklemore & Ryan Lewis the most-streamed act on the service and the most-streamed male artists, their single “Can’t Hold Us” was also the most-streamed song of the year. The accompanying debut record for that single, The Heist, was also the most popular of album of the year.
The duo’s “Thrift Shop” came in at #3 after Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” at #2, and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” followed at #4. Although “Thrift Shop” charted at #3, however, it was also the most-streamed song of the last five years, which isn’t too shabby. Spotify launched in the U.S. in 2011 and a few years before that in Sweden.
Other notable chart additions come courtesy of Rihanna, who held her title as the most-streamed female for the second year in a row — despite not releasing a new record — and 17-year-old wunderkind Lorde, who was dubbed the most viral new artist on the service, meaning her jams were shared the most. Daft Punk’s hit scored the title of most viral track with “Get Lucky.”
