You don’t need the Lasso of Truth to get to the heart of the matter: “Wonder Woman” on television is simply not working right now.
After NBC and David E. Kelly swung and missed on their failed in 2011, The CW swooped in with their own attempt at bringing Diana of Themyscira to the small screen in a show called “Amazon.” Last year, the network passed on the initial script, ordered a second one, and … well, that appears to have been the end of it, as CW president Mark Pedowitz has now confirmed to IGN that “Amazon” isn’t going forward.
“These are iconic characters,” he reasoned, “so we’re going to be very careful with Wonder Woman. You only get one shot.”
Rather than trying to fix what was wrong about “Amazon,” Pedowitz and The CW are focusing on some of their other DC Comics properties, including red-hot “Arrow” and the upcoming “Flash” pilot.
“I’m very bullish on the show,” Pedowitz said of where things stand with “The Flash,” played by Grant Gustin and introduced on “Arrow” earlier this year. “I think what Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, Geoff Johns and Marc Guggenheim did introducing the character on ‘Arrow’ was great. And because of that, we felt that rather than try to squeeze in a spinoff, let’s make it into a bigger pilot. So if we do launch the series, we’ll launch it with a bang like we launched ‘Arrow.'”
With “Arrow” and “The Flash” in their sights, and a possible “Hourman” TV series in the works as well, The CW seems confident in their comic book offerings. Still, the failure of “Amazon” is yet another blow for jilted Wonder Woman fans. On the bright side, the Amazon warrior is very much on her way, played by Gal Gadot in 2015’s untitled “Man of Steel” sequel.
