College is an opportunity to reinvent yourself, so don’t let your past bring you down. Here are the people who have got to go, like, yesterday. Do yourself a solid and ditch ‘em, pronto.
1. Your High School Ex
One day you guys will hopefully be able to “just be friends.” Today is probably not that day. Cut off communication with your ex, so you can fully appreciate all the new hotties you’ll meet at college.
2. Your Lifelong, Unrequited Crush
If it hasn’t happened by now, it’s not gonna happen. Stop driving yourself crazy wondering “what if” and get on with your life.
3. The Mean Girl
It seems like every high school had their own Regina George. De-friend this person immediately after graduation and never look back — unless it’s to make fun of her just like she made fun of you (but we didn’t tell you that).

4. The Friend Who Always Ditched You For Their Significant Other
If it’s Date Night every time you want to hang, wish them a nice life together…without you in it.
5. The Gossiper
Don’t tell them what’s going on in your life, but maybe keep in touch jussttt enough to get the dish on who broke up, who got engaged, who got arrested and who got pregnant post-graduation.
6. That Person You Had To Be Friends With Because They Were In All Your Classes But You Never Actually Liked
You don’t need to pretend anymore.
7. The Friend Your Parents Called A “Bad Influence”
Sorry, but your ‘rents were probably right about this one. If you have to break a law to be friends with someone — by stealing, by ingesting questionable substances, by getting into fights — they’re not worth a second of your time. You don’t want to get caught up in someone else’s legal mess.
8. That Classmate Who Always Asked What Grade You Got
Being competitive about sports with your friends is a good thing. Being competitive about grades is not. There’s literally nothing to be gained by asking someone what they got on a test, especially in high school when there’s no curve to bring you down. Don’t be that d-ck who asks your study buddy about their GPA.
9. The Kid Who Asked To Borrow Your Homework Every Day
This was arguably the most annoying person ever. They were only friends with you when it was convenient for them — a.k.a. whenever they “forgot” their “completed” homework assignment at home. Uh huh.
10. Your High School Sweetheart
We don’t mean your ex or your unrequited crush. This one’s a little tougher: The person you’re still actually dating. There are some exceptions, of course, but for the most part, college means change. After a few months of university life, you’re not gonna be the same person you were in high school. Growing apart is natural and breaking up, especially if long distance is an issue, isn’t the end of the world. See #1.
11. Yourself
Not to get all meta here, but say goodbye to your high school self. The next four years will be exciting, exhausting and life-changing. You’ll be a little different soon, because that’s an inevitable part of growing up. You’ll leave college as a completely different person than you are now — and that’s kind of awesome, when you think about it.
BTW, watch this video, because you’ll need to make some new friends at college…
