16 Sequels That Are Always Almost About To Happen

You know how there’s always talk about sequels that “are about to happen” or that have a “script that’s almost there,” but that never actually happen?

It’s not that stars are lying to us. That’s just how Hollywood works. Movies can take a really long time to come together, and sometimes all that keeps a project alive is continuing to talk about it.

The 16 movies below are in varying stages of development — some will be made, and some won’t — but we’ve been hearing a whole lot without much to show for it.

1. “Zoolander 2″

Derek Zoolander may strike a pose again, but Justin Theroux isn’t likely to direct. He told Vulture that the decision rested on “The Leftovers,” which did get picked up, so he probably won’t be running things behind the camera. He did, however, write the script, which is supposed done and ready for a read-through, according to Will Ferrell.

2. “MacGruber 2″

Will Forte told Collider in August of this year that director and co-writer Jorma Taccone had just sent him a finished outline for the sequel – and actor Ryan Phillipe confided to us that the villain was amazing. So stay tuned?

3. “Bad Santa 2″

Billy Bob Thorton told an audience at Loyola Marymount University this month that at the moment he was “just waiting for a script” to the sequel to the 2003, to which “Entourage” creator Doug Ellin is attached to rewrite and direct.

4. “Bill and Ted 3″

MTV talked to Keanu Reeves for “John Wick,” and this is what he had to say about the often-discussed sequel: “It’s closer to happening, but not happening. We’re fighting the good fight.”

5. “Super Troopers 2″

According to Steve Lemme in October 2014, “Fox is going to distribute the film, but we needed to raise the money for it. We’re close. There may be a Kickstarter launched to raise the last little bit.”

6. “Army of Darkness 2″

In late 2013, Bruce Campbell corrected a previous statement he made, saying that “there’s no reality whatsoever” to talk of a fourth Sam Raimi-directed Ash movie and making the status of this sequel particularly confusing.

7. “Clerks 3″

In September of this year, Smith explained on his podcast that the failure of “Tusk” led to a sudden greenlight for “Clerks 3.” There’s no word yet on when cameras will roll.

8. “Goonies 2″

Choosing the shadiest of outlets to confirm a sequel with, director Richard Donner told a random TMZ paparazzo that “Goonies 2″ was something that’s actually happening. We haven’t heard much since.

9. “The Girl Who Played With Fire”

Last we heard about David Fincher’s follow-up to “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” the “Gone Girl” director said that he thinks Sony had spent too much money on a sequel to abandon plans entirely.

10. “Zombieland 2″

After years as a member of the development undead, “Zombieland 2″ found some new life when Sony hired writer Dave Callaham in September to pen a script for returning director Ruben Fleischer. There’s no word on returning cast.

11. “Beetlejuice 2″

When MTV spoke with Michael Keaton for “Birdman,” he confirmed that Tim Burton had some intention to direct, but that he had yet to see a script from Seth Grahame-Smith.

12. “Independence Day 2″

While it doesn’t seem like Will Smith wants anything to do with the “ID4″ sequel, Jeff Goldblum is involved and said that a script had been handed in this month, but still called the project “nebulous.”

13. “Bad Boys 3″

The status of this one depends on whom you ask. Martin Lawrence is very confident that it’s happening. He even announced it on “Conan,” but there’s little else beside his word (and a script rewrite in late 2013) to go on.

14./15. “Blade Runner 2″ and “Prometheus 2″

In Ridley Scott’s growing queue of sci-fi movies to make, the order currently is “The Martian,” then “Blade Runner 2,” and who knows when from “Prometheus 2.” Both sequels have scripts, but it sounds like “Blade Runner” is much closer to a greenlight.

16. “Rush Hour 4″

Jackie Chan had some strong words for some producers after they approached him about “Rush Hour 4″ without a script. He recounted the story to an audience during a Q&A. “I don’t need another ‘Rush Hour 4.’ You need ‘Rush Hour 4,’ ” he reportedly said. “Show me the script.”

Writer/editor for MTV. If it involves cowboys, spies, or hitmen, I’m there. All three would be ideal.
