After taking a break from music to re-invent themselves as artists, Aly and AJ Michalka are back with a new name and a new sound. The sister act 78Violet have released their debut single “Hothouse” with a cinematic music video in tow.
The folk-pop song introduces fans to a new psychedelic sound from the duo that strays from their commercial pop/rock roots. “When you hear it, it kind of takes you a little bit back to the ’60s, ’70s and has that throwback sound as well as the female strength,” older sister Aly, 24, told MTV News.
And, the seven-minute music video is no different. The cinematic “mini movie” opens with voiceover dialogue from the sisters as they model through the visually stunning landscape. “We have something that is very special and we want to let people know our relationship together is kind of really untouchable,” explains Aly.
The dreamy delivery of their mature lyrics and ambient sounds accompany the most Instagram-worthy frames.
This first look at their new sound has definitely created a positive buzz around their anticipated album. While the release date remains unknown, the girls would agree that “Hothouse” gives fans an accurate overview of the upcoming LP. ” ‘Hothouse’ would even be a great name for the actual album itself,” they said.
