“My Favorite Things” is a feel-good song from “The Sound of Music.” But Lauryn Hill has flipped that classic on its head with her new song, “Black Rage.”
Sung to the same tune, the track — which was recorded a few years back, and has been performed live in the time since, though the audio has never been put out until now — was released on Wednesday night, on the heels of continued tension in Ferguson, Missouri, and across the country following the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.
“An old sketch of Black Rage, done in my living room. Strange, the course of things. Peace for MO. – MLH,” Hill wrote when she posted the song on her site.
“Black Rage is founded on blocking the truth!/ Murder and crime, compromise and distortion/ Sacrifice, sacrifice, who makes this fortune?” she sings over subtle percussion and guitar strums.
