After last year, it is truly hard to picture the Video Music Awards without Miley Cyrus. Like, there was a time when foam fingers only existed as accessories for sporting events, and to be honest, we can’t even remember what that life was like. There was, of course, a VMA world before 2013, and Miley Cyrus existed within that world. She’ll continue to exist in that world because–YUUUS–she’s attending the 2014 VMAs on Sunday. To fully prepare for her appearance, let’s take a closer look at Miley’s past VMA moments.
2008

Aw, li’l bb Miley in a sparkly Zac Posen dress on the 2008 VMA Red Carpet. Miley nabbed a Best New Artist nomination that year (alongside Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, LOL) and introduced Pink. Maybe her 2012 Pink-esque haircut was inspired by that time she introduced her at the VMAs? We can dream.

Despite the fact that they were up against one another, Miley posed with Katy on the red carpet. She also practiced her tongue-wagging skills, which would come in handy five years later.
2011

Miley didn’t attend the show in 2009 or 2010, but came back in 2011 in a full-length Roberto Cavalli gown. She wore her hair up–maybe foreshadowing that the following year she’d barely have any hair at all?

Or maybe she just wanted to show off the low scoop in the back of her dress?

Either way, Miles took the stage with Shaun White later in the show to present the Moonman for Best Rock Video.
2012

Then, in 2012, she broke out the VMA big guns. She debuted her newly short hair on the VMA red carpet and served up a whole lotta cleavage in her sheer-paneled Pucci gown.

While the back of her gown wasn’t as deep-cut as in 2011, it was almost entirely sheer. The height of her hair is so enviable, especially in L.A. in August.

During the show, Miley joined Mac Miller to introduce Pink… the same year she debuted her platinum Pink-esque hair. Things got #META at the VMAs, y’all.
2013

And then, it was 2013. Miley’s year. She started off the night in a vintage Dolce & Gabbana two-piece and baby buns. When we saw Miley on the red carpet, we had no idea what we was in store for later that night, right? RIGHT?

A little while later, Miley emerged from a giant stuffed teddy bear wearing a furry leotard. If you don’t remember the entire performance: it’s a whole lotta fur and a whole lotta tongues. That’s basically it.

Moments after finishing her “We Can’t Stop” performance, Miley stripped off her bear leotard and emerged in a nude latex bikini. People freaked out. People freaked out more when she gyrated on Robin Thicke and even more when she used a foam finger for non-cheering activities.
And now, we’re days away from post-2013 VMAs Miley appearance. We can barely sleep at night we’re so excited. So, Sunday (August 24) starting at 8 PM EST on MTV. See y’all there!
