Out November 10, Live: Her Greatest Performances will be the late singer’s first-ever live LP, the AP reports. The posthumous release, her second after 2012′s I Will Always Love You: The Best Of Whitney Houston, will feature 16 iconic live recordings spanning Houston’s entire career, from “The Merv Griffin Show” in 1983 to “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2009 — with plenty of stops at 1991′s “Welcome Home Heroes” concert special along the way.

Personally, I’ve always had the softest of soft spots for her rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl XXV in 1991. Yes, I know that it’s not a Whitney original. Yes, I know that blind patriotism is dumb. Yes, I know that the NFL is seriously effed sometimes. But please lower your pitchforks, and let me explain.
Whitney’s national anthem performance is track #7 BTW.
The power of Houston’s vocals mixed the effortless ease with which she lays waste to Tampa Stadium is nothing short of inspiring. (And I haven’t even begun to extoll the virtues of that early-’90s windbreaker/headband combo…) Quite simply, it’s the gold standard against which all other pop divas’ national anthems should be measured.
Perhaps the performance is especially dear to me precisely because of all of the personal turn-offs — i.e., sports, sports, sports, jingoism, sports and uhhhhhhhhh sports — it overcame in order to win me over.
Ain’t it shocking what Whitney Houston can do?
