Oscar de la Renta died on Monday (October 20) at the age of 82.
His wife of 25 years, Annette de la Renta, confirmed the news to The New York Times. The world-renowned fashion designer also leaves behind four step-children from his two marriages.
ABC News reports that he was diagnosed with cancer in 2006. This has not been confirmed as the cause of death at press time.
Born in the Dominican Republic in 1932, de la Renta has designed for Lanvin and Balmain throughout his storied career, not to mention his own namesake fashion house.
His work was perhaps best worn by A-list actresses and First Ladies of the United States, from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to Michelle Obama. Most recently, he designed the wedding gown worn by Amal Clooney at her September wedding to George Clooney.
Not long after the news broke, Vogue posted a loving tribute on Instagram, writing: “The ‘King of Evening’ will be forever remembered.”
