BROOKLYN, NY– The excitement is building on Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues in Brooklyn, as music’s biggest stars are making their way in and out of the Barclays Center to prepare for Sunday’s 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. Drake, for one had an extra bop in step on Friday night as he made his way through the arena halls after his rehearsal.
The practice runs were closed off to anyone not part of Drake’s Toronto gang, but the pounding bass from a few familiar tunes rattled through the Barclays walls and gave those who weren’t allowed on the center’s floor, just a taste of Drizzy’s set.
“I get to do the new record, I’m doing ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home’ into ‘Started From the Bottom,’ so [it’s] really just an exciting performance to show the range and also show the diversity of music on the album,” Drizzy told MTV News in an interview that will run entirely on allaccess.mtv.com during “RapFix Live” on Saturday (August 24) at 5 p.m. ET.
“It’s an incredible year to be a part of this with all of the KAWS design, it’s just like the best possible thing ever. We just rehearsed and everything sounded great,” he added, intrigued by the special edition Moonman created by the famed Brooklyn artist.
The Young Money virtuoso is bringing more than just his OVO sound to the VMAs, he’s also adding a bit of fire to his show on Sunday.
“We’re blowing the stage up, I got things going off, I had to test with the fire marshall and it’s gonna be good,” he revealed. “I’ve been doing this for a while, pyro doesn’t scare me. You know I’m ready, if you’ve ever been on stage with Lil Wayne, he likes explosions and they’re loud you know, so I’m used to it.”
The August 25 VMAs is the perfect set-up for Drake, who will drop his third studio LP Nothing was the Same one month later on September 24. Not only is he a scheduled performer, he’s also nominated in the Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Direction categories for “Started,” so he’s expecting a pretty big night.
“I’m pretty much just trying to stay consistent. I released the artwork the other day, so you’ll see a bit of that in there,” he said of his stage show. “Just trying to set it off, September 24, that’s all I’m focused on, this performance and then just going home to put some final touches on the album with 40 and that’s it.”
