On Sunday night, Justin Timberlake was honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. It was not only a moment that celebrated Timberlake and his impressive solo career, but also paid homage to his tenure in one of the biggest boy bands of all time, ‘NSYNC.
And, in what had been one of the most highly anticipated rumored performances of the evening, Timberlake not only performed a medley of his own greatest hits, but was joined by his ‘NYSNC bandmates to perform signature tracks like “Girlfriend” and “Bye Bye Bye.” “You asked for it,” Timberlake told the room, which erupted into screams of delight.
Since the group disbanded a decade ago, Timberlake has kept quite busy, releasing three solo albums, including 2013’s The 20/20 Experience (he’s prepping the follow-up, The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 for September 30) as well as appearing in films, including “The Social Network” and the upcoming “Runner Runner” and “Inside Llewyn Davis.” While Timberlake was busy conquering seemingly everything, what have the other guys been up to? MTV News takes a look.
JC Chasez Chasez has remained a presence in the music industry. After trying to launch his own solo career with his album Schizophrenic in 2004, he clocked studio time writing for the likes of David Archuleta and fellow ’90s boy banders Backstreet Boys. He’s also been a judge on MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew.” Currently he’s managing a new girl group called Girl Radical. And despite telling MTV News in 2009 that there would likely never be a reunion, he graced the stage with the boys Sunday night.
Joey Fatone After ‘NSYNC parted ways, Fatone competed on “Dancing With the Stars” twice, in 2007 and 2012. Fatone has also appeared on several other reality series and game shows including “The Singing Bee,” “Family Feud” and Food Network’s “Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off.” He’s also graced Broadway in shows including “Little Shop of Horrors,” “The Producers” and “42nd Street.” In 2008, he seemed receptive to the idea of a reunion telling MTV News, “Who knows?”
Chris Kirkpatrick When the group went their separate ways, Kirkpatrick kept a lower profile. However, he did appear on VH1’s “Mission Man Band” in 2007 and later on the CMT reality competition series “Gone Country 2” in 2008.
Lance Bass Like Fatone, Bass appeared on “Dancing With the Stars,” competing on the show in 2008. Additionally, he’s hosted two Sirius XM radio shows, “Dirty Pop With Lance Bass” and “The Pop Ten With Lance Bass.” He’s also tried his hand at acting, including roles in “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” and “Drop Dead Diva.”
In addition to doing all that and training to head into space in 2002 (he never went), Bass made headlines when he came out as gay on the cover of People magazine in 2006. Bass had always been open to getting the group back together, telling us in 2008, “It’s something I would love to talk about.”
