When Drake named his upcoming album Nothing Was The Same he wasn’t kidding. If early sales predictions hold up, Drizzy could be headed into uncharted career territory.
According to early Billboard projections, Drake is on track for the second-best chart debut of 2013, with sales pegged at north of 675,000.
That would put him behind the first part of Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 Experience (968,000), but ahead of the year’s current second-best bow, Jay Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail, which opened with 527,000 in July. (If you ask Hov, he actually moved 1.5 million copies, but Billboard did not count the one million Jigga pre-sold through a Samsung app giveaway.)
It would also mark Drake’s best first week ever, ahead of 2010’s Thank Me Later (447,000) and 2011’s Take Care (631,000), as well as his third #1 Billboard debut in a row. If numbers hold, it would also be the best first week for a hip-hop release since September 2011, when Lil Wayne moved 964,000 copies of Tha Carter IV.
The OVO boss recently revealed the seven-minute mafia-inspired video for the emotional ballad, “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” which he told MTV News could be his stepping-stone back into acting .
“Bill Pope, who directed ‘The Matrix,’ directed the video and basically it’s a video full of acting because I’m dying to get back into acting,” Drake said. “So there’s actually no performance in the video — it’s all acting. A$AP’s in it as well, plus a lot of different cameos, but it’s a story-based video.”
“I based it off of some of the old Michael Jackson videos like ‘Moonwalker,’ so it’s sort of exciting, violent a little and scary a little, but it’s great.”
