Hip-hop was abuzz earlier this month after a snippet of Kendrick Lamar‘s verse from the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards cypher allegedly taking shots at Drake made the rounds. But during Tuesday night’s show, Drizzy wasn’t the only MC to feel the piercing sting of his lyrical venom after his two-minute session was up.
Kendrick rode Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones Pt. II” as he took on all rappers who clapped back at him for his combative verse on Big Sean’s “Control.”
“I’m the master that masturbated on your favorite MC, until the industry had wanted me assassinated/ You either corny or an opportunist/ I let you eat now go back to church and steal crackers at communion,” he rapped, with a steely gaze, emphasizing each bar with authority.
“What I was doing? I’m bout to crack the Da Vinci Code/ Yeah, and nothing’s been the same since they dropped ‘Control’/ And tucked a sensitive rapper back in his pajama clothes,” he continued, now eyeing his “Poetic Justice” co-star.
“Turn a shotty into a verb, you know I’m a killa/I’m on yo head, you know I’m a killa/The West Coast Cosa Nostra/Under oath ’til it’s over/ Ya over owe us/ So what the f—?/I f— you n—as up.” During the promo run for his third solo LP, Drake remained strategically aloof concerning Kendrick’s verse, alleging that no one was even listening to it anymore and that it was genuine.
“It just wasn’t real to me,” Drake told Hot 97’s Angie Martinez. “I saw him after that and it was just like love, so it’s like was that real or was that for the people? Those were harsh words, you can’t just say that and see me like, ‘Yeah, man, what’s up,’ pretending like nothing ever happened. That’s not real.”
Additionally, many believe the “Started From the Bottom” rapper lobbed his own lyrical grenade at Kendrick on “The Language,” where he spit, “F— any n—a that’s talkin’ that sh– just to get a reaction/ F— going platinum, I looked at my wrist and it’s already platinum,” which was likely in reference to Lamar’s platinum-selling debut, good kid, m.A.A.d city.
Not to be outdone, Kendrick, who shared a win for the night with an absentee Drake for the Perfect Combo Award for their work on A$AP Rocky’s “F—in’ Problems,” let it be known that all of the Toronto rapper’s masterfully dismissive comments didn’t kill his vibe.
“If you need me just call on me/ Hold up, wait a minute/ Your career ain’t sh– unless you got some Kendrick in it,” he rapped in a clever retort to Drake’s own “Drake featuring Drake” line, before signing off with the declarative new title, “King Kendrick.”
Judging by the onslaught of comments and the trending topic #KendricksVerse, Aftermath’s newest champ definitely claimed the lyrical throne for the evening.
