The final battles on “The Voice” came to an end last night as coaches put the finishing touches on their six-artist teams.
Coach Cee Lo Green was the only one left with a steal, leaving some very talented singers in the dust and fellow coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera with some tough decisions.
Here were the night’s highlights:
Big, Sexy Vets
Who better to kick off the last night of battles than ex-military vets Jonny Gray and Shawn Smith (a.k.a. Big Sexy)? Team Cee Lo’s strongmen led the way with “Refugee,” taking advice from Miguel to have “attitude” and “presence.” The duo delivered a riveting performance, full of stomps that left the audience in some heat. Levine “believed everything” the pair did and Shelton called it “hot.” Gray’s cool attitude, look and sound won out, solidifying his spot on Green’s team.
Soul-Off
Team Adam was up next, pitting soul singers Barry Black and Preston Pohl against one another in a smooth battle to the Temptations’ “I Wish It Would Rain.” From rehearsals, Pohl’s ease with the song made him shine, while Barry struggled to find the same level of comfort. When they hit the stage, Pohl was effortless and Black was full of charm. “Everything about you is cool,” Shelton told Black after he dropped his air horn in the middle of the battle, but the choice was clear to Levine, selecting the naturally talented Pohl to stay on.
Sassy Closers
Olivia Henken and Stephanie Anne Johnson closed the night out repping Team Christina with “Done” by the Band Perry. County singer Henken was clearly in her comfort zone, especially since Johnson had never before heard the song. Levine applauded Johnson’s “grit,” but Shelton took the “country approach” with Henken. Xtina sided with Shelton, leaving Johnson open for the last steal, which Green totally took. He had been looking for his diamond in the rough and found it in Johnson’s soulful voice.
With the battles behind them, coaches and artists now prepare for the epic knockout rounds where another surprise will be revealed: the coaches have another steal!
