Best Songs Ever? Some Grammy Fans Beg To Differ

The 2014 Grammy nominations were revealed Friday (December 6), and with the myriad ecstatic reactions — see Ed Sheeran — there also came wails of misery. Yup, some notable musicians were left off the list this year, and fans are calling the Grammys out for being naughty instead of nice.

One Direction fans were perhaps the most vocal about about the boys’ absence from the list, especially following the massive success of their newly released LP, Midnight Memories. Although the record itself was not eligible for nomination, as it was released in late November, singles like “Best Song Ever” certainly were.

One Directioner suggested a saucy alternative to actually watching the Grammys, inspired, no doubt, by a stunt Justin Bieber pulled during the 2013 Grammys: “Justin, Ariana, Miley, Demi and One direction should get together on the day of the grammys and do a live stream. lmfao,” tweeted @avonanndbeyond.

Others were a bit more optimistic about the guys’ chances in 2015, as their record did come out in November, making it eligible for nomination at the next awards. “tbh I think the boys will be nominated next year for the grammys,” tweeted @nouismyshimmy.

Lady Gaga‘s Little Monsters — although peeved that her single “Applause” got no Grammy love — shared @nouismyshimmy’s optimism. ARTPOP also dropped in November, making it eligible for the next Grammys. @GagaChapel, obviously aware of this state of affairs, tweeted: “All artists better enjoy their nominations this year… LADY GAGA COMING TO SLAY 2015 NEXT YEAR – LADY GAGA.”

@ForARTPOP took a slightly more humble approach, solidifying Gaga’s trust in her legions of fans by tweeting: “Lady Gaga has over 9478736578346712 Grammys in my heart.”

While most of the more vocal denizens of Twitter were speaking out due to skint nominations, some felt like their favorite stars had been slighted — particularly, fans of Justin Timberlake, who was nominated for seven Grammys, but not Record or Song of the Year for “Mirrors,” nor Album of the Year for The 20/20 Experience.

“I was here for the Grammys, but I’m disappointed you shut @jtimberlake out of the definitive categories,” tweeted @diasaah17, while @TheRealFifsta fumed, “So the best-selling artist of 2013, Justin Timberlake, doesn’t get a Record, Song OR Album of the Year nod? #GRAMMYs”

Lorde fans were also a bit peeved. Although the 17-year-old singer scored her share of nominations — including Record and Song of the Year — she was not nominated for Best New Artist, which was mystifying to many fans. “I would love to know how Lorde did not get best new artist nomination for the Grammys #snub,” tweeted @0nly__Exception, summing up the feelings of all Lorde supplicants.

And Lorde’s wasn’t the only name absent from the Best New Artist list that had blood boiling. Fans of Ariana Grande were also stunned that the stellar-voiced singer didn’t make the cut. “Thank god for Ed Sheeran but I’ll never forgive the GRAMMYs for snubbing ‘Wrecking Ball,’ Ariana Grande, ‘Heart Attack’ and One Direction,” tweeted @alexandergold, while @johnny_lopez20 said, “I’m so offended that @ArianaGrande didn’t get a Best New Artist nomination for the Grammys #whataretheythinking #shehasthebestvoice.”

Miley Cyrus, Queen of 2013, also predictably got some shoutouts due to “Wrecking Ball” and “We Can’t Stop” being no-shows on the nominee list, with one Twitterer lamenting: “can u imagine miley cyrus licking the grammys.” Yes. And we wish this could be made manifest as well.

As much as things change with the Grammys, a few things remained the same — namely, a notable lack of nominations for mega star Justin Bieber. While his Beliebers took to Twitter with fantastic ire, Bieber himself tweeted, cryptically, “If someone does wrong to you do not pay them back by doing wrong to them Romans 12:17.” Does that mean no special live stream this year, Biebs?

What do you think of the 2014 Grammy nominee list? Who do you think was snubbed?
