One Direction told every girl what she wants to hear when they guested on “Saturday Night Live” and gave a debut performance of their track “Through the Dark.”
Holding tight to their microphones and looking intently into the camera while singing lyrics like “I know you wanna be loved,” the five members of the biggest boy band in the world right now capped off the night with the latest song off their new Midnight Memories album. With its rootsy composition and touching lyrics about wanting a girl to know that there is hope after a broken heart, “Through the Dark” gave each member a moment to shine — and steal hearts.
But before Harry, Zayn, Louis, Liam and Niall got Directioners swooning, the U.K. boy band, along with “SNL” host Paul Rudd, took the opportunity during Rudd’s opening monologue to break some very big news: Nine Direction is a thing, and it’s pretty awesome!
Let us explain. Rudd brought out his “man band,” including “Anchorman 2” co-stars Will Ferrell, Steve Carell and Dave Koechner, to battle One Direction. Ferrell even spewed some jabs like “Beat it, Menudo!” But once they all joined in on “Afternoon Delight,” peace was made, and Rudd announced that they are Nine Direction.
The boys of One Direction took the stage (because the other four members making up Nine Direction were on a bathroom break, duh!) to sing their current single “Story of My Life” and, similar to past performances of the song, it was clear that the group wanted to let the lyrics and vocals speak for themselves, as the singers opted to keep it simple with just light bulbs illuminating the stage in the background.
We’re guessing the boys had good practice during the epic, seven-hour 1D Day two weeks ago because though they didn’t appear in any of the show’s live skits, they did make a cameo in one hilarious short.
Rudd played Dan Charles, One Direction’s biggest fan ever. A grown man in a sea of tweens, Dan brags about how much he knows One Direction better than anyone else. Our personal favorite moment was when he asked a fellow fan who her favorite member was, and she said, ‘Niall, because he’s blond.’ Dan corrects, informing her that Niall is a natural brunette and, to the melody of “What Makes You Beautiful,” sings “Oh, oh, oh, you don’t know your basic facts!”
It has been a big year for One Direction, especially with Midnight Memories nabbing the fourth-best opening week in 2013 with upwards of 500,000 in sales. And as 2014 inches closer, the boys and all Directioners have a lot to look forward with the “Where We Are” stadium tour.
