Will Champlin may not have walked away from “The Voice” as the victor on Tuesday night, but his third place finish felt left him feeling “vindicated” none the less.
Having been bounced from Team Adam to Team Christina and back again throughout the competition, Champlin tells MTV News that the ping-pong feeling was nothing new for him.
“I’ve been bounced from one publishing deal to this thing and that thing before, so I’m like, ‘OK, I know what it’s like to be bounced,'” he said of the journey. “It wasn’t really a big surprise to that. I definitely felt vindicated.”
The Los Angeles native says he learned several valuable lessons during his time on the series, including “stand your ground” and deliver on both consistency and the element of surprise. But it was his ability to stand up for himself that Champlin believes kept him in the competition.
“When I disagreed with something, I spoke up about it,” he reveals. “I’ve seen a lot of artists shoot themselves in the foot and go with it and go with the flow, and they go straight home. I think that’s why I was able to stick around.”
The talent certainly doesn’t hurt. Champlin delivered an unbelievable version of Etta James’ “At Last” earlier this season (which he calls his most “personal” performance) and on Tuesday (December 17) joined forces with Aloe Blacc for a powerhouse rendition of “Wake Me Up.”
Up next: “Your life after ‘The Voice’ is to bring sound to those ears,” Champlin says. As for his own signature sound, he describes an eclectic mix of indie, electro, dub step, soul and groove-based music inspired by Alex Clare, the Black Keys and more.
Ultimately, Champlin’s teammate Tessanne Chin walked away with the grand prize on Tuesday, with Team Christina’s Jacquie Lee coming in second.
